I have a 1997 F-150 that just got totaled in an accident (mainly the front-end and frame but all mechanicals ok). I just replaced the motor about a year ago, less than 2k on it. It is the 4.6L Windsor block ("6" code) w/ the 8 bolt crank.
I'm looking to find out what kind of Expedition I could put this into(97-99/00?) without too much hassle. I know the Romeo blocks all had 6 bolt cranks so i'm guessing the "W" code models wouldn't work, I have run across a few 99 Exp's with the "6" code, but with some being 6 bolt and others being 8 (at least w/ the trucks as I found when I replaced the motor) so is that a crapshoot? Would the 5.4's ("L" code) work?
I don't really know what to look for as far as computers, wirings, mountings/alignments or any other differences so I figured I would ask. I know there were two different transmissions for those model year Exp's, but curious as to what models/years would be an 'easy fit'. Anyone?
There are some other differences that I've heard of such as different size front cover bolts and possibly accessory mounting bolts but other than that, not too much. There shouldn't be a problem with the auto trans provided the t/c will bolt up to the flex plate. You would be better off if you stay with the OEM coded engine. Just in case you ever have to go into a dealership. They have a hard time with engine swaps regardless of the reason.
