Need help with possible buy.

I found a 2000 F350 4x4 with an extended cab, utility box, 6 speed manual and 120k miles. It wont shift into 3rd or 4th gear, and has not ran since October of 2008. I talked to a guy who is selling it for a widow. It was her husbands truck and well he no longer needs it. Any way. I guess it wont hold water, you just poor it in and it runs out somwhere from the front of the motor, he says. I think it is the water pump, but could the engine be cracked? Also one of the wheel cyl went bad and all the fluid drained out so the brakes dont work. I am going to go and try to get it running to see if it is worth buying. What should I look for on these trucks. I have an OBS truck so I am somewhat familiar with the 7.3, just not in the 99+ trucks. What should I look for, what should I avoid? stuff like that. Thanks guys.

Oh yeah, the bats wont hold a charge either. What would the best way to start this thing would be? I am 3 hours from the truck.

ummm. I hope the price is right. Sounds like alot of work. BUT with only 120K on the clock it COULD be a good deal. The trucks run tranny fluid in the 6 speeds with a pump and a cooler. Not shifting into 3rd and 4th could be a shift fork issue or just not wanting to line up right in the position it is in. I would try it once you get it running and the clutch pushed in a few times. Makes sure the clutch master has fluid in it too. It is a small container NEXT to the brake master on the fire wall with a screw on cap. The water issue sounds like a bad hose to me. Take your OBS over there with some good cables and jump it. As long as the alternator works it should run once its jump started. Wheel cylinders are an easy fix.

I would negotiate with the guy on lowering the price if you get it running. As for things to watch out for. 120K is low miles for one of these especially a 2000. Should be good to go.

If you've got an OBS, then this truck is close enough you know what to check for. It's pretty much the same 7.3

Pour the water in and look to see if it's a cavitation issue on the front cover, a crack in the block, or just a leaking water pump or radiator.

If it's been sitting that long, it will take a lot of cranking to get it started. Fill the HPOP reservoir and change the fuel filter before you even try to crank. It might also be a good idea to bring a rubber fuel hose and 5 gallon can of diesel. The Superduty fuel pump is electric and mounted on the frame rail under the drivers seat. Using a fuel line disconnect tool, pull the line off the back of the fuel pump and stick the hose on there from your 5 gallons of fresh fuel. Make sure the crankcase is full and then use 2 sets of jumper cables from your truck and start cranking.

Do you happen have a chip with a hi-idle setting? Don't forget to bring something to clean the battery connections and bring some extra oil. I wouldn't be too surprised if an o-ring or two sprung a leak.

In my mind, the big things would be to check for dust in the intake, where the water leak is coming from, and is there any pressure blow by out the fill tube?

Well it sure seems like a good deal to me. She wants 5k OBO. I was thinking of offering 35 or 4k for it.

WOW! That's low, but still, you'll have some issues to deal with so I hope she drops it for you.

WHAT?!? I almost fell out of my chair when I saw that.

For that kind of money, I'd make sure the engine ran right, that it was definitely the water pump, and then I'd pick it up.

Chris aka F350-6 gave some good advice and I couldn't put it any better myself. If you ask me, the truck will run and do what it's supposed to, but it will need some love and time get it back to the way it should be.

In addition to what Chris said, if you do decide to purchase it, swap ALL fluids: Trans, transfer case, oil, differentials, brake fluid, and enjoy your new truck.

It's a shame you live so far away, if you lived in Dallas or somewhere in South Texas, I'd gladly lend a hand free of charge...it's a hobby.

If I were you I would bring batteries. 2 dead batteries that will not hold a charge are just a drain when you try to jump start, and unless you got a REAL GOOD set of cables chances are you will waste the 3 hour drive.

Figure the cost of a trans into your pricing in all this plus the labor you will have to put into it. Sometimes a good deal ends up costing more than just finding a comparable truck unless they really come down on to a price you really can,t resist.

If I read this right October 2008?? then that means that it has been sitting for over a year, Make sure there are no little critters living in that truck. Check under the truck also make sure its not rusted all to hell.

I cannot stress enough to make a list of what needs to be done and compare total costs, I have towed way too many "good deals" for friends that either end up costing thousands more than if they just went and bought a running car or they end up being driveway ornaments and get sold to the next guy looking for a good deal.

I am not going to worry about the bats. If and when i go down to look at it. I am going to be pulling down an equipment trailer to put it on. I will just come-along it up on the trailer. I just want to hear it run, make sure it doesn't have a dead cyl, make sure it doesn't have a cracked block, and just do the normal check over. Other than problems that could arise from sitting for so long, there cant be much else wrong with a 120k truck. It has been in a dry, cold, but dry part of the country so I am not worried about rust.

Anybody know how much a wrecking yard 6 speed goes for? Or a rough guestiment of what a rebuild kit costs for it, i have redone several manual trans. I am not worried about the brakes on it either. I just hope i can get it started.

blue it looks like you want this truck. But as said you had better look into the turbo and see if this motor is dusted at the very least. I have seen guys get a great deal until they get it home and find out what all is wrong its not cheap fixing some things. Good Luck.

Since it only has 120,000 on it the turbo wheel blades should still look good not rounded at the ends or no chunks out of them.
