Smile I'd like to make my truck more efficient...

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2007 F150 Crew Cab King Ranch. I put a dual exhaust from flowmaster on my truck along with a K & N cool air intake... I'd like to make her a little louder along with more fuel efficient... I'm only getting 12mpg's right now...

I was thinking about putting a cortex superchip... any ideas???

Thanks!

Sarah

Best bang for the buck for better performance is a good programmer. I don't know much about the Cortex programmer, but I know that Super Chips does make good programmers. A lot of people on this site prefer Edge or SCT programmers with custom tunes. The Edge and Super Chip products only come with what the company programs for all trucks of a given make and model. The SCT is custom programmed to your needs by the selling dealer and the tunes can be upgraged later if the need or desire arises. PHP converts Edge programmers to custom tune programmers. I would recommend custom tunes with a CAI installed to take better advantage of the increased air flow. The CAI and exhaust upgrades will not give much improvement to fuel economy or power by themselves. In fact they may hurt both some without a programmer.

Sarah, unfortunately if you use reform gas (10% ETOH) 12mpg is as good as it gets with standard mixed driving habits. If you get a custom tune you might be able to lean the O2/gas mixture a little bit more and get some more MPG (maybe 1 to 1.5), but it really wouldn't be worth the risk (leaning out an engine can cause some bad problems) and would shorten the life of your engine.

With these trucks the only way to gain more mileage is to stay off the throttle and keep the RPMs under 2000rpm when accelerating.

That being said, with the mods you have now a tuner would really wake the engine up. I use the Edge tuner and there are quite a few others on here that use the superchips and are pleased with them. However, for ease of use and functionality the Edge is the way to go if you don't mind canned tunes.

Welcome to the site!

Your MPG gains will be minimal at best. Any aftermarket MOD money you put into your truck will take tens of thousands of miles to recoup.

IMHO, leave it alone, run normal suspension and tires, do your routine maintenance like clock work and drive gingerly.

Gotta agree...Mods may increase performance, but usually will hurt economy.Ive got an 07 F-150 XL with the 4.2 long bed Automatic. Im averaging around 16-17 combined, and would love to get it up to 19.But from what Ive read it is indeed "as good as it gets'.....Do the maintenance, keep up on the tire pressure, and enjoy the ride.

The only modification that will help is connected to your right ankle.

To improve your MPG take an egg and hard boil it. Now tape it to the gas pedal. Use it as a training aid for learning to keep your foot light on the pedal. If you do not break the shell you are doing it right. If you really need to learn to keep a light foot try a raw egg instead.

try these also

if you add a 1 1/4" throttle body spacer and a tornado. it should help. i did all that with my '01 f150 and brought it up from 14 mpg. to 18 mpg. as long as i don't hound on it.

A 4 mpg improvement, that's what, 22.5%. If it was that simple every vehicle out there would have a spacer and tornado from the factory.
I CALL BS.

One interesting note...
On one tank I decided to try keeping it below 2K rpm and see how good a fuel mileage I could actually get.
I got the worst fuel economy ever. could be a fluke i thought so i changed the fuel filter thinking maybe that was the deal. still am not making as good as i was three months ago.
what could make the fuel mileage drop like that??

best ive ever gotten is right at 18 mpg... on a trip driving around 65mph for a whole tank. i think that must be the sweet spot on these trucks
