I have a 1969 F-100 Ranger 2wd with a 360. It is in real good shape (needs paint job). I have motor mount kit ect, and a 429 to put in it. I was going to build a street rod out of it. But now my plans have changed and I found a 1978 F-150 4x4 with a 429 in it. I was thinking of taking my 69 body and putting on the 78 frame, and putting in my newly rebuilt 429 in it. Has anyone here done this and is it going to be more work than its worth? I was wanting it to sit high so if I have to build a custom body lift, ect thats no biggie. But if this is going to be real tough I might just sell my 1969 and my 1996 Chevy Tahoe and buy a 1979 or older 4x4. Any suggestions?
Sounds like a great idea. You won't have any trouble mounting the cab and front clip as the mounts are the same. The 73-79 wheel base is 2" longer (extra length added to back of cab), so you will have a little extra space between the cab and box if you center the wheelwells. The frame is wider on the 73-79 behind the cab so you will have to tinker with the box mounting.
Hope it turns out good for you. There's a thoroughly rotten 77 shortbox 4x4 around here I've been hoping to talk a guy out of for the same reason; a place to mount one of my 68 cabs and the 76 flareside box I've got sitting around...
That would be sweet, having a flareside box on it. I sure would like to get my project going, but Im in the process of moving and they are talking about another lay off at work. So I might hold out a lil longer.
