What should I be aware of on the 99 5.4l EB Expedition?

I recently purchased a 99 Expedition EB with only 40k miles, I am a new owner to Ford and don’t know what to be aware of. I hear rumors that the transmissions have problems, engines are dying, etc. What are some known issues (that are more than just single cases) of EB Expeditions with the 5.4 and the problems that are known? Is there any reason that I should purchase the $1000 warranty to protect the transmission, engine or any other major parts?

Any help that you can provide would be much appreciated! Thanks

First off, the warranty is worthwhile in the event something catastrophic does happen. I'd say get it. As far as problems and such, I haven't heard any horror stories about the trannys. There was a problem with the 5.4L engines that were built in the Windsor plant - a defect in the manufacturing of the head on the passenger side would cause a bigass oil leak. The fact that you bought yours used is in your favor - after 40K miles, if the problem did occur earier, most likely the engine or head was replaced. I'd say don't sweat it - enjoy your truck. It's a great vehicle.

BTW - welcome to the forum. There's some great people around here. Don't be a stranger.

Definately get the extended warranty. I got my 98 expy with 34,000 miles. 15,000 later and I have had the following fixed or replaced: new passenger side tie rod end, new fuel computer, blown spark plug (common on the 5.4L and had to have the threads heli coiled) and new ball joints. The tie rod broke 2 months ago. The other stuff happened in the last month. I just got it back yesterday. My 99 explorer has had many problems as well. Both of my extended warranties have more than covered the initial cost. I still have the warranty on the expy for another 40,000 miles. If you don't need it, consider yourself lucky. Don't get me wrong, I love Ford's......but for the last few years I have seen many problems. By the way, my policy cost $1400 and the repairs above total @ $2000. Not to mention towing and rental cars.
Should have never gotten rid of my 80 bronco!

So a warranty through the credit union that is $900 is the way to go? Any advice on what to look for when purchasing the warranty? Who did you go through? I checked Ford and because I have over 36k miles on the truck it doesn’t qualify for their warranty.

Thanks for the advice; I am thinking that the cost is worth it. Now it’s just a matter of where to purchase and what to look for.

One word of advice on the warranty. Check to find out who does the service work covered under the warranty. Many dealerships do not do the work themselves and they use the cheapest mechanic to do the repairs. I found this out the hard way, took my truck in to get service work done and it took them 2 weeks to replace the rear end in the truck, and somehow the truck managed to rack up 1500 miles when it was being repaired. Funny huh?!?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Dec-02 AT 01:44 PM (EST)]WOW $900.00 Thats cheap. I would definitely take it for that price.

Just look to see who in your area accepts that warranty. it kind of defeats the purpose if you have to go drive 2 hrs to get a repair.

I got my warranty when I purchased my truck from Carmax. They cover almost everything and at any genuine repair facility. My first repair was the tie rod end. I had that done at my local Exxon station (covered). My latest work was completed at my favorite Ford dealership (covered). The warranty is through MaxCare.
