i have aquired yet another fine specimen of vintage ford truck.i have what appears to be a 1 ton 1946/47 panel truck.i cannot find a rating plate,or where it was located on the cowl.there is a small 2x2 inch plate that has patent numbers,but no chassis or body numbers.any suggestions? looked on both frame rails and can't find any numbers either. now to what i know from ist look..timken rear,750x17 tires,6 lug wheels with 1-1/8 lug nuts,floating rear axels, barn doors on rear with 2 small windows, side mount spare (in right side of body) , 59BA flatty, 4 speed trans, cargo floor is 8' long. any insite is greatly appreciated..thanks in advance for your help. gotta stop finding these strays....

The first thing I suggest is that you take a second look at your wheels. They should be 5 lug x 6 7/8" bolt circle. That and the 17" wheels say it's a tonner. The wheels will be multi-part. I'd be interested in knowing whether you see a separate lock ring on the face of each wheel. Most of these wheels with have what's called a "lock ring" design. Some, thought, were a design where the wheel halves connect at the middle of the wheel. Looking at them you'll think they are one piece, but they aren't. They are called "widow makers". There should be numbers on the frame. The only place that I know for sure where they are at is on top of the frame rail stamped just rearward of the steering box.
Also there should be numbers on the transmission plate that is just rearward of the shifter. Of course this is under the transmission cover so if you can get a light and squeeze up under it to see it or just raise the cover a little to read the numbers. That should tell you what you have.
Here is a site to decode what the numbers mean. http://www.mercurypickup.com/truck_data.htm Just select 1946 and if there is no number that matches in that year go back and try 1947.

the wheels are infact 17" .there is an outer lock ring,not the widow maker split in the middle. the bolt pattern for the wheels are also as you said, 5 on 6.5 +- with large studs. appear to be 13/16 or 7/8 in. are there no other numbers on the body? a book i looked at said there is a motor/frame number that are supposed to be the same. i had hoped for a rating plate to help the VIN verification prossess go a little easier. the registry office doesn't like to get dirty.i'll keep looking and thanks again for your help.stuff prior to '48 is new to me.. the cab style is starting to grow on me and the fact it's a panel truck. my first real look at this style cab was in june,my friend came home with a '45,marmon-herrington with a sno-go set up..painted very yellow..very cool indeed...thanks again...

saw that you have a '52 M-H F-3. wished you lived closer to Ct.there is,in my friend Tony's junkyard a '52 F-7 COE with M-H under it. what is strange about this truck is where the doors begin to radius the fenders at the bottom of the door posts,the doors are cut in half and lower piece is welded in place.makes it tuff to get in,but makes a nice tool holder in the step well. there is also a 1942 autocar U7144T all wheel drive coe tractor(soft top) and a 1941 biederman 3 axel all wheel drive truck.these all came from the M-H dealer in windsor Ct in the early'60's as trade ins.don't know it for a fact,that is what Tony told me.he has owned the yard since '46.he was 85 in april and still there 6 days a week..be well,thanks again for your help....

Stu and co. Chuck has been chasing the '52 for quite some time.the biggest problem is the price will change depending on the owners mood. Chuck has made a number of offers to the owner without much luck.i may just dag it out of there just because i can. i'll stage it at my friends farm and then put it up to the highest bidder.now on to other things. there are a number of very cool fords in the yard. F7's, F8's,'54 F800 road tractor,'56 C 800 coe tractor,about a dozen '51/'52 C7 coe coca-cola trucks with bodies.the is 1 '48 C6 coke truck.there is also a '52 P400 that was factory converted to a 20? passenger bus.'71 F350 SRW camper special crew cab, i believe there is also an early marmon-herrington transit bus on a ford chassis.that one is very blocked in and i no access to verify it. i am only going by what the owner tells me. he knows when it came in and where it's from. there are also lots of other trucks,but we'll keep it ford.thanks again for all the help,gonna still hunt for the rating plate,it's not on the glove box door either.wonder if it was pilfered long ago.

I have only seen pictures of the rating plates so far, haven't been lucky enough to see one in person. They were held in place by the screws that hold the handle in place so were easy to "lose". As the others have said the number you are looking for is the engine number and it was stamped into the top of the bell on the transmission and on the drivers side of the frame between the steering box and the firewall usually. They were hand stamped so can be fairly light with all the grime and rust over the years. Good luck.

The numbers you're looking for would start with the model designation, which for a '46 one ton panel are 69Y-82 for a V8 or 6GY-82 for a I-6. If it's a '47 the numbers are 79Y-82 for the V8 and 7GY-82 for the six. Too bad the glove box door plate got lost. Stu

i will continue my search for the numbers at a later time.right now i am looking for 700x17 tires to get it off the rims.the tires shredded while loading on trailer.they just fell to pieces..thanks again....

Finding locally I guess would be the best, and probably cheapest, but if not you can go to the following on-line dealers. My trucks use 17s also, and the only size I recall finding is the 7.50 x 17 in a truck tire. I think I recall seeing a 7.00 in a car tire, but that's for you to decide whether it's right for your truck.
