Since I wedged a 427 into my 47 1/2, I need to move the radiator assembly forward to the supposedly 6 cyl position. However the splash pan and upper front rad. shroud (part 8162) will no longer fit. When I referred to http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/F...42-47truck.jpg , it shows the same part numbers for both the 8cyl and 6cyl configurations. I have never seen an Upper rad. piece which is 3 inches smaller in depth to support the 6cyl placement. Did they mount the rad in the back position on 6 and 8cyls ?
The upper radiator panel and the lower are indeed different. The 6 cylinders were moved up on the frame, so the lower grille panel was basically like the 8 cylinder, however the part on the rear most of the panel that is parallel to the ground is not present on the 6 cylinder panels. So you could easily modify your 8 cylinder panel to make it work with the radiator in the foreward most position. As for the latch panel, the 6 cylinder did use a shallower panel, again to accomodate the move foreward of the radiator. I have seen a few of these pop up on eBay, but the 8 cylinder panels are far more common. Again, you could, with a little metal work, modify the 8 cylinder panel to work by trimming off a couple inches the back of the 8 cylinder panel. The numbers you see on the drawings (as yes, they do show the incorrect panels for the 6 cylinder) are the numbers for the parts, it's the prefix that would determine 6 or 8 cylinder. A 6 cylinder piece would start 1GC while the 8 cylinder part would be 21C. I hope this helps. If you want, I can email a picture to you of the differences in the parts as I have both the 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder parts here.
Yesterday I did some cutting and fitting on the lower radiator splash pan to get it to fit the forward 6 cyl. rad position. Still need to shorten the upper cowl 3 in., or figure out how to put a little bumpout on each side, which would actually tuck the top part of radiator and rad frame underneath. The universal radiator interferes with the upper piece slightly on the sides, but it is much shorter than the stock radiator. Where the stock unit sticks well above the cowl, the top of the alum unit is almost an equal distance below.
For those of you trying to figure out parts for moving the radiator between the 6 & 8 cylinder positions, here are some picts of the two upper cowls. The larger on (in front) is the 8-cyl.
