[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Jan-03 AT 11:26 AM (EST)]my '72 f100 has this conversion...the indy hurst shifter..shifts "backasswards"...anyone have an idea how to correct this?
the current pattern.1st is up against the seat....2nd is up toward the dash and 3rd is over and back to the seat.
Where is reverse? First is towards the seat, reverse is straight forward from first. Second is to the right and forward, third is straight back from second.
you cant change this. the pattern is only suppost to be one way. i have one and it's a pain in the ***. i just chipped a tooth on my reverse/first gear. and the trans was just rebuilt one year ago. i'm going to swap another 3speed from my dad's old '77 e-100. but i really want a np435 to swap in. anyone know the length of the np vs. the 3sp.?
Guys
thanks for the replies
I had the patern "screwed" up on my first post......it should be
first.....to far right against seat
second.......to the left then against seat
third....straight toward dash
reverse....straight toward dash from first gear position
can this be changed or am I stuck with this pattern???
If i'm stuck.not many people will get in and drive off.....lol
It sounds like you have the linkages reversed. My friend has an old 3 speed in his race car, and the pattern is like all other 3 speed's I've seen, and it's in the floor. Pattern is this
R 2
1 3
You said you had this pattern, correct?
3 R
2 1
If it's like his setup, there is a long rod and a short rod going to the levers on the side of the transmission. It sounds like you need to switch where these connect to the shifter linkage coming from the handle. Just reverse the two rods, I'm not sure how to explain it other than that. Leave the short and long configurations connected the way they are to the transmission levers, but swap the side of the shift linkage they are on. I wish I had a picture of this somewhere other than in my head, but I don't so try to understand this if you can, I know it's confusing. Hope this helps, and if you need me to explain something let me know.
You also need to flip the lever on the transmission for the 2-3 shift because 3 should be at the bottom of the H instead of the top, regardless of which side it is on. I don't know how similar the Ford is the the saginaw, but both levers on the tranny had the pushrod end above the pivot point going into the transmission if that helps any. To fix the up and down being backwards, just flip that lever on the tranny so that the pushrod is on the opposite side of what it was before. And still reverse the long and short rods at the shifter. Hope this helps.

The very first car I had was a 1956 Ford with the standard tranny. after 15+ yrs the collum shifter broke. I installed a shifter and put the levers on the way they came off. It shifted the same way yours does. Was told to turn the shifting arms up instead of down. However the thing was spring loaded and wouldn't shift into reverse so I left it as it was. I never had a problem. Other ppl who tried to drive it did .
