reverse in cold

i can usually start my 95 ranger and back out of my diveway and all is fine, but if on a cold day i take a short trip and turn off the truck when i try to go again i have to go in forward. if i have to back up the transmission takes a long time to engage, when it does the engine misses and the overdrive off light flashes, if i try to move in this condition the truck barely chugs along. once i get back far enough to go forward i can turn the engine off, start it agian and put it in drive and everything is fine.
I was thinking of changing the electronic shifting control module. does this sound like a logical place to start?

One thing I would suspect is a bad O-ring in the low/reverse servo piston. In later years these were changed to a double lip seal made from a different material. About as easy to change as a transmission filter. Could also be loose valve body bolts. I suspect that you also have a delayed reverse engagement at other times and a loss of low engine braking. Don't think anything electronic would do this.

How many miles does truck have on it? 3rd gear direct drum is used for reverse,If clutches are worn it may not want to back up when hot. If computer senses that it takes too much fluid to fill 3rd piston, this may be the reason for the overdrive light flashing. Does it do this all the time when it is Hot?
This is just a guess but 3rd gear gives alot of problems in that tranny.

Truck has 135,000 miles on it, but has no problem at all when hot. Once it warms up everything is fine.
