1940 Ford pickup...what's it worth?
1940 Ford pickup...what's it worth?
I found a 40 pickup (body only) this week that has been sandblasted and primered. Usual rust in the floor of the cab and some on the cab corners. Hood is in good shape, doors are solid, all four fenders are solid, bed is fairly well shot but the tailgate might be able to be saved. Running boards are straight with just a little pitting. One bumper included. No frame, no suspension, no driveline...just sheetmetal. A local guy told me today that the rear fenders are worth the asking price of this body, but I have no clue myself, I have more experience in the 53-56 world. I would like to build this truck as I have always liked the 40 body style but I don't want to shoot the wad on the sheetmetal...I know that the chassis, driveline, and bodywork are not going to be cheap. Thanks in advance for any insight you can lend....
For what it's worth, I bought a pair of original steel rear fenders at Hershey, PA for $1500 after searching the whole meet for two days. Never saw another pair for sale there, or anywhere since. That was about eight years ago. I haven't seen any since. They just aren't out there. The rarest of the pair is the right rear since it was out of sight in turning and backing, and really took a beating more than the driver's side. Fiberglass fronts and rears are readily available for the 40-47 1/2T trucks. Ford Truck Parts and Repair Panels for your classic truck at Northern Trucks has a lot of new steel parts for those years, and their running boards are like from Dearborn. I have the second pair they made. The owner has the first. They fit like a glove and are well worth the money.

How much is the Ford you describe worth? Well, the '40 pickups are not out there much anymore, and it's worth whatever you can get it for, that you're willing to spend. Doing the truck over is going to be expensive, even if you do all the work yourself. Better get used to it. A lot of time and effort too.
You can see my 15 year project and $35,000 later in the 1940 FTE gallery of F-1 trucks. It's the Bahama Blue one with American Torq-thrust wheels. A nice '40 PU is not going to fall into your pocket. Mine was just appraised for collision insurance at $50,000. Each member of my car club has pledged to save one classic vehicle and describe what is to be done with it after they're gone. Too rare to leave to a teenager.

Hi , I`m restoring a 1940 for the past 4 years and have a very good idea on what you have there.
40 cab with rust $600.00
rear fenders pair $650.-1200. Average pair $800.
front fenders pair $400-700.00
Running boards pair $400-600
hood $400-600
tailgate $250
doors pair $700
Northern classic trucks has a complete bed for 1750.00 w/hardwear and wood. The cab metal on my 40 ran just under $400. for all 4 corners and front floors.
I hope this helped,Todd

Thanks for the inputs, the seller was asking $2,200 for the body but since then I have found two more that are complete for about the same money. I can't afford another project right now but I keep an eye out for vintage tin wherever I can find it.
