Heat stuck on panel/floor

Both of my rangers have the same problem, one did it near the start of winter, the other about 2 weeks ago. On both occasions i was trying to switch from floor to defrost/floor position on the selector and the levers were stuck, tried to fiddle with them, no movement. So I was irritated and tried to force the levers, nothing, except a loud pop and still stuck. I have taken the dash panel where the radio is at apart to try and remedy the problem. I found the cable that controls, the damper is not moving, just pushing it around the tab. So my question is besides having to take the entire dash apart to get at the damper, what can i do? I really just want it set a floor/defrost so i can see out the window. Dont really care about the other settings. Maybe try grabbing the cable with pliers and trying to free up the cable? Any quick fixes or other suggestions?

Follow the cable to its other end. You will see a cam/follower that is supposed to move a flap to different positions as you move the lever. If you can move the pin that sticks up into the cam, while at the same time moving the cam, you can set your air flow to wherever you want. Sometimes the cam needs to be lubed, or the surface can get worn to where the pin gets stuck, but you can give it some assistance...
This is assuming that you have mechanically operated heater controls.
