Seeking knowledgable not prejudiced advice on whether to rebuild a 197K mile 5.0 with no compression in #5 cyl. Valves ok, must have lost the rings. Or buy low mile running used. If used for good price what year, car or truck and size is the better upgrade? Thanks a bunch.
What condition is the chassis and body?? Rust, accidents?? What would you use the truck for if it was running? Did the truck serve your purpose when it was running??
If the rest of the truck is in good shape and it serves your purpose and you like the truck-I would think that rebuilding/replacing the engine would be the better deal.
Replacing the motor with another in running condition is easier and likely cheaper, with that much on the motor it needs a complete overhaul anyway. A '94+ truck 5.0 would be an exact replacement.
i would rebuild the motor, or at least pull the heads off and take a look before you make your decision, if you rebuild it use some performance rods the 5.0s have 5/16ths rod bolts that just suck i have seen a couple windows in the block because of these rod bolts (not my block luckily) but if you do a fresh rebuild you will have confidance that your motor will be good, plus you can also put in a lumpy cam and while it's at the machine shop take a dremel to your heads to make them flow a little better
Find a suitable replacement to drop in, then have fun rebuilding your existing engine with a few performance parts for the future!
I would also go this route.....You keep your rig on the road with a quick drop in replacement and in your spare time, you rebuild your old one with a few upgrades.

Sounds like time to build a 347 stroker!......Seriously, having another block to build on is a great learning experience and alot of fun, small block Fords are getting quite reasonable on performance parts nowadays.

You know it!....
I will soon be pulling the 5 liter out of my 93 and will be doing that same build myself. I am still in the early stages of deciding what parts I will use....but I am somewhat eager to get it started.
It will be my first build as well and I'm sure it will be a great learning experience. You can bet there will likely be some related threads started once I get going. It's great to have the expertise of some the folks on this site when problems arise. I have spent countless hours researching and reading....soon it will be time to put it all to the test..
