I have a 88 F150 with a 302 and the 5 speed. The motor needs to be rebuilt. I would like to upgrade the cam while I have the motor out, but am not sure on the best bet. The truck has 31” tires, 3:08 (18 code) gears and long tube headers. I have a set of 4:10s I could put in but would not want to kill my MPG because I drive the truck for work. What is the best cam for my truck? Thanks
With 31in back tires the 410s would help you out a ton over the 308s... I would thik that would even get better milage?? mabee im wrong ?? I like the e 303 cam...There will be a lot of help shortley with cam advise ..Lew
yeah you would definatly use the 4.10s you will get better mileage with a 302 and 4.10s with 31s than 3.08s
as for the cam the E 303 sounds NASTY
here is the cam i used and i LOVE it couldn't be more happy with it but i doubt it will work with fuel injection unless you have mass air it's a speedpro cam the # is listed under the info box on youtube i forget what it is YouTube - Cammed out 5.0 mud truck open headers
Yes.. use the 4.10s and look at the Comp 31-255-5 flat tappet. If you are going to convert the motor to use a roller cam there are a lot more cam choices.
I would get the computer from a 5.0L mustang and wire in a MAF while you are at it. Since you have a manual trans, it makes things easier. Last MAF swap I did, I used a A3M computer. Worked quite well.
I've got the 31-255-5 cam that Conanski mentioned. It's running with speed density with no drivability problems. I like the cam; there's no big-cam lope, but a truck doesn't need that. I've never checked the fuel mileage with the new cam, but it seems to be pretty well the same as the stock engine.
