Im just wondering why a gen 1 lightning 351 with all the factory goodies isnt as fast as a... 302 in the same truck with about the same stuff...Or is the 302 a better performance motor over the bigger 351 ???
Hmm, the 351 should be faster, the only thing I can think of the 302 bein better is I don't think there is any other V8 that can wind up like a 302 can. I've seen a 302's wind up to over 5K stock and stay there for a few minutes and never have a problem
Stock to stock GEN 1 Vs say my 96 (302) will smoke my 96, the only thing i can think is differnt transmissions, Gen 1 E40D, My 4R70W I have 3.55, Gen 1 4.10,
I have drove a 94 Gen 1 the only differance i felt was my 96(302) had better acceleration,
That's 280 duration and 0.498" lift(e303) vs 260 duration and 0.416 lift(Gen1)!! Can you say "strangled"?
Ya i thought the gen 1 might have more cam than that...Not that the 303 is a big cam.. But the 351 has us buy 50 cubes..& its like a full second in the 1/4 mile difference.....Even from a 20mph kick same results...
Any advantage the 5.8 has out of the hole is quickly lost when there's a big HP difference. Given the same GT40 heads and intake on both motors the 302 is making 50hp more, and because it makes peak HP at a higher rpm it's better utilizing the gearing. This is the current situation...
Put the same cam in the Lightning and it's no contest, same peak HP + more TQ = you lose!
Ok so just put a e 303 cam in a lightning & it will run over a second faster in the 1/4 mile...News to me ??? What looks good on paper & what happens in realality is sometimes to different things....Over a second for a cam upgrade.. ???? .. Well i guess it would be more like 2sec....No contest i loose.....Theres only one way to find out...Lew
Did someone say supercharger..!!! One day soon i hope...I agree the 5.0 motor that they put in the truck isnt very good in stock form...I know i drove it for 10 years stock before we did this build...My only point is that if you build the 302 right it will perform very well in a truck...As far as the difference between my truck & the lightning...Heads & intake about the same...Lightning gt-40 heads & intake....302 HO dooe heads & edelbrock...both have headers & good exhaust...But i have no cats...& long tubes..Gearing...lightning... 410..Not sure on stock tire size...i have..456 30in tires...The bigest difference would be cam....with e-303 with 1.72 rockers...would give it a lift of 539..??? ithink ??...But the 351 having a big advantage in cubes...Lightning 240 HP...340 torq..at flywheel....302...The best i can figure to flywheel is 300 HP..360 tourq...The bigest difference i can tell is the 302 pulls good from idle all the way thru to5500 rpm or so....1/4 mile..Lightning 15.3....302...14.4....I know you can do more work to the lightning & make it much faster than it is & i like them... i would love to own one...I think there one of the best trucks ford ever built..the gen 1...Just my opinion...But there are a lot of pepole who say a 302 is useless in a truck...Stock i will agree there not much...But if built right they do a good job...& Its not done yet...Alot more to go...Thats what makes this stuff so much fun...I have a blast with this thing !!! .Lew
