Hello, im pretty new to this forum...first post
So anyways, ive been searching around my local craigslist for a cheap, beater car that still runs nicely and i think i may have found what im looking for. It is a 1989 Ford Ranger, Black, Stick Shift, 2WD it has 176xxx miles on it, which im not too concerned about because of the price and the fact that its a ford pick up with a manual transmmisison. This would be my first car, im 17, and i dont think insurance would be too high (for a 17 year old male at least)? I dont have pictures yet, im waiting for the seller to email me back. What do you ford aficionados think about it?
welcome to fte, i just bought a 88 for ranger 4x4 with 187,000 on it and it runs great. i had to do some stuff to it but nothing you couldent do with some spare time. my first truck was a 94 ford ranger 2wd and i just sold it and it had 333,000 miles on it and ran great, then one day it just starting to knock. i think that you will be very happy with buying a ranger as your first car, there easy to work on good on gas and its a ford. good luck with the truck.
Great ad, he doesnt say if its a 2.9v6 or a 2.3 4cyl.......Be careful if its a 2.9v6, cracked heads can be a problem. check the cond. of oil and coolant for mixing of the 2, sure sign of cracked head.............Other than that, take someone who knows vehicles, with you to look at it.
That is an interesting ad. Never seen a Ranger described like that. He must be a writer of some kind. For $500 if it runs you are ahead of the game. Most vehicles of that price range don't run, or they do but they need a head gasket (like the 1991 Ford Explorer I am looking at for $550) Definitely check the oil to see if it is milky brown or not. If it does need a head gasket, it still may be worth buying if you or a friend knows how to do that kind of work.
I now have Ranger #4 - the 89 I had almost 10 years when I got hit in the rear and it was wrote off. It had a 2.9 standard trans -and it was a great truck. It was bought by an owner of a body shop and fixed up and he is still driving it and he is a GM guy lol.
