I have a 1999 F350 SD with 144,000 miles. After the truck is fully warmed and driven around a while it sounds to me like it has a slight engine knock. (comes and goes. not always there) Being a diesel they are noisy so it cant be heard while driving but when at idol I can hear it inside the cab. Is this normal and if not is it something I should worry about or will the truck just run forever like this ? ? ?
Hmm. Depends on how loud it is. I'm not sure what to say because you said you can hear it inside the cab.
Powerstrokes are famous for having what is called "cackle" which is an injector that knocks a bit louder than the rest. I have a clicky #8 injector but I can only hear it when I am standing outside of the truck near the wheel well.
Has the knock always been there or is this a new development?
I noticed inside the cab with the window closed when I listen for it because its quieter inside the truck. It doesnt seem to do it all the time. Not cold and sometimes when I come to a stop when driving. I dont know how long its been there Ive only had the truck for about a week. Otherwise the truck feels fine and runs excellent.
The oil crossover hose, or HPX, connect the oil rails in the two heads together to help the #8 injector get sufficient oil. #8 is directly behind the #6 injector and also happens to fire right after #6, so it can tend to not get enough oil.
Mine does it.. Knock, knock, knock. Only when it is warmed up. It started suddenly one morning and never stopped after that day.
So i went ahead and did this -> Welcome to guzzle's In-tank Hutch Mod Web Page
No noticeable difference. So i went ahead and did this-> Ford
No noticeable difference.
I store my truck for winter months so that is when i work on things. Changing out glow plugs i thought i would rip out the noisy #8 injector. (haven't decided what to do with it yet, Glow plugs first)
I bought a used (270,000 miles) 2001 7.3L that has a knock. It is coming from the passenger side and is either #5 or #7 (rear two on the passenger side). I did what Dan has done, plus the Dino fuels, plus all fresh Ford remanufactured injectors - but not the Hutch mod yet. No change in the knock. Mine does it all the time. The only time it doesn't do it is when I take my foot all the way off the pedal at 50+ mph. Then the fuel shuts off to the injectors and it gets quiet.
It doesn't seem to hurt anything, but it is annoying. I call it my one "Cummins" cylinder.
P.S. I also tried another good used IDM - no change.
