Looks can be deceiving! lol The coil pks are not that difficult, but since you're doing them I would definitely suggest going ahead and changing the plugs too. That my friend is the difficult part, not so much because it's hard to do it's just frustrating and time consuming b/c of 4 & 8! Have some antiseptic and some band-aids nearby for banged up knuckles, and a 12-pack of beer doesn't hurt either!
Also, don't tighten the screws holding the cop's too much or you'll end up breaking one like I did.
Frog, I had my Expy for almost 3 years and its been one of the best vehicles I've ever owned. Other than a few faulty items needed, most of the things I've done to it is because I wanted to keep it updated. Good luck with yours, there is a lot of useful info on this board. Just do some advanced searches and you should be able to find what ever you need.
Yeah, I've got a couple of burps here and there. The map lights up front can not turned on from the switches there on the overhead panel. But if I use the wheel switch on the dash console, they light up and THEN I could turn them on and off. Also, the keyless entry key pad doesn't work.
Oh yeah! I found out where the factory code is for my 00 Expedition -
On the driver's side.
If you get down on the floor and look up behind the dash, you will see the "white" factory sticker" attached to the wall . The best way to describe it is to find the fuse panel and then look waaaaay back behind it and there it is. It is not as hard as it sounds but you can not see it unless you get down there on the floor board and then look up towards the firewall!!!!
I'll throw in my $.02. Numbers 2 and 6 shouldn't be that bad to swap. I would say that while you are changing them, change the boot and spring as well. That way if there are more problems, you know you can rule those two coils out of the equation. However, if you do decide to do the plugs, prepare to not have your vehicle for a while. I worked on mine and it took a week doing a little every night. I'd also suggest having an extra set of hands near by to hold stuff out of the way and the flashlight. If you need, I have all the links saved from FTE for doing a plug change on an Expy with a 5.4L as well as a few other websites.
One thing you will need is a click-type 3/8 torque wrench for doing the job. The plugs have very specific torque ratings.
