'56 F-600 front axle options
I'm looking at swapping out my F-600 axles with a late model donor F-550. I have the widow maker rims and don't want to invest in optional wheels only to end up with the limitations of the final drive ratio and air brakes. I am not concerned with narrowing the 2wd front axle on the F-550 but don't want to have to raise the existing ride height due to the lack of travel and frame clearance. My questions are;
1) does anyone have front axle swap experience they can share or other options?
2) what year 2wd straight axles [I'm guessing F-350 and above] would be considered a U / drop axle - vs. the straight F-550? In other words, similar to the existing axle where I wouldn't have to notch the frame?
I'm interested in the F-550 I found because I would like to keep the gvwr as close as possible, cab chassis width rear, low mileage and 19.5 wheels with new tires. Trying to stay within budget and would like to stick with all components from one donor vehicle.
