1964 9" pumkin removal......

Anyone have any suggestions on how to pull a 9" center chunk out of the housing. I doubt it has ever removed and sealed pretty well. Ay suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Remove drums, remove 4 bolts each side that hold bearing retainer/backing plate. Pull axles, you will probably need a slide hammer for this, or put on an old rim and beat on the backside with a sledge.
Remove driveshaft and nuts that hold the carrier to the housing. Pull the center section forward. You will probably have to tap on the side of the carrier to unstick it from the gasket, or hammer in some thin aluminum wedges to split them apart. (aluminum won't score the mating surfaces because it is softer than steel, make some of these so you don't always use your screwdrivers!, I know they are usually laying close-by!) Be prepared when it comes loose, they are a bit heavy.
Your old lady will really love you when you come into the house smelling like 80w90 oil.

You can also make a floor jack adapter out of a couple of angle iron pieces that bolt to where the pinion carrier bolts to the center section. It is a lot easier to have the jack holding the weight then your arms as you try to pull it out or guide it in.

Using the jack is a good idea. Once the truck is secure, and I mean SECURE on blocks, you can do as suggested, or, if you don't have a floor jack, use a bottle jack on the pinion and apply pressure to break it loose from the housing. And yes, the 90w bath can be had here, so consider trying to suck it out first, or put a pan there and once it crack loose, let 'er sit for a while to drain.

Good luck.

Leave a couple of the nuts in place slightly threaded in while you crack the chunk loose from the housing. This will allow it to drain without the possibility of losing the pumpkin and getting a bath.

And no ammount of wedges and beatings will allow it to be removed without removing first the copper sealing washers placed under the nuts when it was first assembled.

Make sure the washers and remnants are removed before sliding the case out as they will jam and conform to the threads and generally make things miserable.

Most punkins if R&Rd in the past will not have these. Just permatex or silicone to make the seal for the stud.
