FAQ - Vacuum Diagram Acronyms

I have had such a hard time figuring out my vacuum hose routing and what each thing does I thought I would post what I have so far. I have a 1981 F-100 with a 302 2 BBL. I found about 30 different ways this engine has the hoses routed in the Library. And everything is in Acronyms.
VACUUM DIAGRAM ACRONYMS

A/CL: Located in the air cleaner
A/CL DV: Air Cleaner Diverter Valve
A/CL BI MET: Air Cleaner Bi-Metallic Valve
A/CL CWM: Air Cleaner Cold Weather Modulator
ACV: Air Control Valve
AIR: Ford calls this the Thermactor, short for Thermal Reactor. CA vehicles are installed with it as standard. Air Injection Reaction is what it stands for.
AIR BPV: Air Bypass Valve (aka Thermactor Air Bypass TAB)
BV: Bowl Vent (on top of the float tanks)
CARB: Carburetor
CPRV: Canister Purge Valve
DIST: Distributor
EGR: Exhaust Gas Recirculator
EFCA: Electronic Fuel Control Assymbly
FLTR: Filter
FPR: Fuel Pressure Regulator
IVV: Thermactor Idle Vacuum Valve
MAN VAC: Indicating Manifold vacuum-Vacuum source
MAP: Manifold Absolute Pressure
PVS: Ported Vacuum Switch
SOLV: Solenoid Valve
SV-CBV: Carburetor Fuel Bowl Solenoid Vent Valve
VAC: Vacuum
VCKV: Vacuum Check Valve
VRESER: Vacuum Reservoir
VREST: Vacuum Restrictor
VRV: Vacuum Regulator Valve
V CK V: Vacuum Check Valve
VRDV: Vacuum Retard Delay Valve
TVS: Thermal Vacuum Switch
TVV: Thermal Vent Valve
PURGE CV: Vapor Canister Purge Valve

Color Codes to do Vacuum Diagram
Red = Main vacuum
Green = EGR function
Orange = Heat control Valve (exhaust & intake) (AKA heat riser but more complex)
Yellow = Distributor advance
White = EGR vacuum (source)
Black = Mainly used for the Evaporative emissions control
Black = Thermactor ACV or Diverter valve
Blue = Throttle Kicker control
Pink = Thermactor Air Bypass Valve (BPV)

So this is what it took me two days to come up with. What a VRV is? What an EFCA is? Still searching. But I have grown to hate acronyms because they can be for many things. Some sound like the same ball park. How would you like to go in and order an LSD (Limited Slip Differential) and get an sugar cube full of drugs? Why it can't be spelled out is beyond me.

I once had a problem with my Plymouth van - the speedo stopped working and the engine would stall whenever I came to a stop.

The mechanic said,"Oh, yea, that's a bad DSS."
I asked, "What is a DSS?"
He said, "Speed Distance Sensor".
I said, "Don't you mean Distance Speed Sensor, as in DSS?"
He said, "No, it's a Speed Distance Sensor, or DSS for short."

You have to love mechanics.

Yes. Go up to "galleries" and click on "Manage/Create". Create a gallery and it will let you upload GIF and JPG's. You can then get links and put them in your posts.

Then we wouldnt have to take it to the dealership, local repair shop or alldata and fix it ourselves.

VACUUM DIAGRAM ACRONYMS

A/CL: Located in the air cleaner

Actually according to Ford, that IS the air cleaner.

A/CL DV: Air Cleaner Diverter Valve

A/CL BI MET: Air Cleaner Bi-Metallic Valve

A/CL CWM: Air Cleaner Cold Weather Modulator

ACV: Air Control Valve

AIR: Ford calls this the Thermactor, short for Thermal Reactor. CA vehicles are installed with it as standard. Air Injection Reaction is what it stands for.
This depends on time of manufacture, and what weight class the vehicle is. All F-100/F-150s have it installed in the united states in one form or another, with our year models. The thermactor system consists mainly of the air pump, the air pump diverter and bypass valves, TAB and TAD solenoids (if equipped) and the catalytic converter.

AIR BPV: Air Bypass Valve (aka Thermactor Air Bypass TAB)

BV: Bowl Vent (on top of the float tanks)

CARB: Carburetor
CPRV: Canister Purge Valve

Also known as PURGE CV: you have it listed below...

DIST:
Distributor of course.

EGR: Exhaust Gas Recirculator

EFCA:
EFCA: Electronic Fuel Control Assymbly

FLTR: Filter

FPR: Fuel Pressure Regulator

IVV: Thermactor Idle Vacuum Valve

MAN VAC: Indicating Manifold vacuum-Vacuum source

MAP: Manifold Absolute Pressure

SOL V: Solenoid Valve

SV-CBV: Carburetor Fuel Bowl Solenoid Vent Valve

VAC:
VAC: short for Vacuum

VCKV: Vacuum Check Valve

VRESER: Vacuum Reservoir Solenoid Valve
Actually VRESER just stands for Vacuum Reservoir. It may or may not have a valve inside it.

VRV:
VRV: Vacuum Regulator Valve

V CK V: Vacuum Check Valve

VRDV: Distributor Retard Delay Valve

Actually Vacuum Retard Delay Valve, as these can be used on more than just the distributor.

TVS: Throttle Valve Solenoid (aka Solepot, Dashpot)
Actually this is a Thermal Vacuum Switch, and is different to a Dashpot. On Fords these are usualy located in the air cleaner.

TVV: Thermostatic Vacuum Valve (aka Ported Vacuum Switches)

This is a Thermal Vent Valve. On fords they are mostly controlled by ambient air temps. Simular to a TVS. Located between the carb and the charcoal cannister.

PVS: Ported Vacuum Switch: Very simular to TVVs except on Fords they are used in the cooling system and are controlled by water temps.

PURGE CV: Vapor Canister Purge Valve

Color Codes to do Vacuum Diagram

Red = Main vacuum

Green = EGR function
Orange = Heat control Valve (exhaust & intake) (AKA heat riser but more complex)
Yellow = Distributor advance
White = EGR vacuum (source)
Black = Mainly used for the Evaporative emissions control
Black = Thermactor ACV or Diverter valve
Blue = Throttle Kicker control
Pink = Thermactor Air Bypass Valve (BPV)
The color codes can be different depending on calibration code and engine size.

Like on my 1981 300-6...

RED: Manifold Vacuum
Yellow: Vacuum Advance
Blue: EGR Function, main source vacuum before PVS.
Green: EGR Function Primary function after PVS.
White: Wide Open Throttle sensor
Pink: Thermactor Control Solenoids main source after TVS.
Pink/Green: TAB Valve
Pink/Blue: TAD Valve

Etc.... To list all my vacuum lines would write a small book.

My point is, Ford had it's own variations of these terms. They are listed in the shop manuals though...

VREST is a vacuum restriction, usually at the thermally controlled valve on top of the thermostat housing.
On my truck it is a simple blue plastic orifice inline with the vacuum line.

There are multiple colors of vacuum restrictors and they are color coded depending on size and how much vacuum is restricted.

My truck has two.

One blue between the WOT vacuum switch and the vacuum source.
One Orange between the distributor vacuum advance and the Spark Retard solenoid.
