1964 Engine Replacement

The 64' F100 truck I purchased several years ago has a 75' 300 I-6 which replaced the original 6 cylinder. My problem is parts from both the 64' and 75' were used to build the engine. I'm past the point of dealing with it anymore and just want an engine that works reliably. I would like to install a reliable 300 engine with components that work well together versus the mix and match I have. So, any suggestions as to where I could acquire such an engine? I'm located in SC.
This forum has been a great help to me over the years.

Welcome to FTE

The I-6 cylinder engine used in 1964 is a 223, which is totally different than the 1965/96 300 I-6 engine.

The only parts that interchange from one engine to another are the plugs, points, condenser, rotor and dizzy cap.

223's have solid lifters, 300's have hydraulic lifters.

The major visible difference: The 223 has the intake/exhaust manifold on the drivers side, these parts are on the passenger side of the 300 (and 240).

In order to use a 300 in place of the 223, someone had to fab up front motor mounts.

The 300 uses one right, one left front motor mount that bolt to the block then to engine stands. These stands then bolt to the crossmember.

The 223 uses a large L shaped motor mount bracket that bolts to the crossmember and the front of the engine.

There are two motor mounts, both are round and mount in the center, one above the bracket, one below the crossmember.

Since the frame used on 1964's is also different from 1965, the crossmember is not the same either.

Are you sure your truck is a 1964?
