I seriously hope your guy was kidding. Acetone will eat your paint off to the bare metal. If he was serious, then he is a true moron and you should never let him touch your vehicle.
At WallyWorld, you can buy this stuff called Goo Gone, or Simple Green. They will work to get the big particles of tar off.
For any persistent spots, buy a Clay Bar and the spray. It'll take the tar off pretty much instantly. But try to get the majority of tar off first as alot will ruin the clay bar quickly.
Even better than the junk above, go to your local autobody supply store and get a quart of wax & grease remover. You don't have to scrub till your arm falls off like you will with all that other stuff.
Put gasoline on a rag and it wipe right off. My neighbor restores cars and told me this and I could not believe it worked. Once the tar is off I usually clean with heavy soap and water to make sure the gas is cleaned off so no one throws a smoke out the window and blows the truck up.
WD-40 is great for this and is completely safe for any finish. Not as nice a solution because of having to use something else to get it off is common cooking oil or PAM spray. Again, totally safe and you can wipe most of it off. Cooking oil is also used in beach areas that have 'tar' on the sand (tarheels, get it?) to get the tar off the feet with no harsh chemicals involved.
I've tried the foam bug/tar remover, you can let the foam sit for a few minutes and then it wipes of pretty easy. Don't forget to use wax after your done.
My 2008 XLT Scab got a lot of tar on it two weeks ago cause it rained just after they tarred and chipped my mother-in-laws road. I was going to get my son. It was so bad that there was about 30 pounds of stones and tar stuck to the underside of the bumpers. So much tar that the town's insurance company now has to pay $420.00 to the local detailer My truck only had 680 miles on it at the time. I was so mad that my blood pressure was 144/100.
Waiting for the check as we speak. I may try some of these suggestions and pocket the cash.
