F150 and straight pipe exhaust

I was wondering if anyone here has maintained there factory cat and just got rid of there stock muffler and put a pice of pipe in place of it? If so how did it sound and did it improve anything?

i had my 4.6 straight pipe for a while. It was just cut off after the cat underneath. It was somewhat loud but not very loud.

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

this is one way i found the sound i was looking for in an exhaust since everyone is different in what they want. so hope this helps ya

Before I welded in my new exhaust a couple years ago on my '05 w/ the 5.4, I removed the factory after cat exhaust and ran it that way for about a month. It sounded pretty much like duel exhaust but somewhat raspier. The four cats and the 90 degree bend in one of the factory pipes restrict the exhaust to the point that the exhaust will never be loud without replacing the complete system.

06 and straight pipe exhaust!

Ok thanks for the info, I did go to youtube and found a truck like mine that got rid of the muffler and had a pice of pipe in place of it, Now the ? is, "will this cause any poor performance when trailering or everyday driving" Thanks..

you shouldn't lose anything on performance wise just by removing a muffler. I believe since you will still have the factory that will keep the same back pressure that you currently have with the factory setup. the only difference is it will be louder.

I unbolted mine in front of the muffler and put a glasspack in its place, even welded a tab and used the old mounting hole. Its quiet with a little rumble at start-up and idle, and its not too loud even when down-shifting or passing.

1,000 miles later, no codes and I got 17 mpg last fill-up.

you won't throw codes by removing the muffler. there's no sensors after it. i had a straight pipe with flowmaster super44 on my '02 s'crew. gets quite obnoxious at 18-2500rpms. i had some codes from running catless so i put the MIL eliminators on there, but i don't see them on ebay anymore.

F150 and straight pipe exhaust

OK so I was on my way this morning to ge that 55 gallon drum cut off and have a piece of pipe installed in place of it, when the guy at speedy muffler said that it may cause a problem and throw the check engine light to come on, he siad there would be no back pressure on the system. So i told him no thanks and left........ WILL THIS HAPPEN?Hope someone can let m eknow, I would like to get the muffler cut off ASAP. Thanks

get you a different muffler shop!!!!!

you will still have the back pressure do to the factory cats still being on the truck.

it will not throw a light since there are zero sensors after the muffler to throw a code. plus there is nothing bad with removing a muffler the only thing a muffler is for is reduction of sound nothing else.

so go find another shop and get that muffler pulled off. lol

I just had them weld in a section of pipe in place of the muffler and had them make a turn down right behind the rear axle. I choose this setup because it seems like every pickup around where I live has pipes dangling because of a cheap install and there is nothing more unsightly the big chrome tips that are half rusted plus when I am hooking up a trailer I hate exhaust in my face so I did not want it straight out the back. It is not loud at all to me compared to most pickups I have heard. It does sound nice and a much cheaper alternative to a cat back system.

Don't know your laws up there, but here in Florida no muffler is a sure ticket getter, besides a major annoyance to other drivers sitting next to you at a traffic light having to listen to the racket. How about not putting the truck community in a bad light, and instead get off the wallet and buy a quality performance muffler that will give you the sound you want, be legal, and not irritate other motorists. Just a thought....
