F-250 7.3 diesel start up and stall problems
My boyfriend is having truck problems so I figured I would joint this site to maybe figure out what it is. The truck has startup problems, sometimes it takes five or more cranks of the key before it starts. Other times it just starts right away. So, he took it to a local diesel mechanic who replaced the IDM module which apparently is known to go in this truck. Since that was replaced the truck has begin to stall while driving but mostly only in the rain? He is really at a loss and is going to take it to a mechanic but figured I would give this site a try first

Welcome to FTE Yankeesgal. First off he needs to make sure his filters are in good condition and the oil level is full (and not too old).
The IDM isn't really that common of an failing issue, but we do see IDM codes that are the result of a loose connector under the valve covers. Do you have access to the paperwork to see what trouble codes were pulled when the mechanic diagnosed a bad IDM? P1316 maybe?
Does the truck just die or does it run really rough before it stalls? If it runs rough, how long does it do this?
Another common issue is the CPS (cam position sensor) which is currently under recall from Ford. Has he had the recall work done yet?

He did change the cam positioning sensor but thinks it might possibly be that again. When it stalls it runs real hard first like its kicking out and then eventually it just stalls all together, but it only does this in the rain? I don't know the exact code when he changed the IDM but I know he said when they took it out it was coroding and falling apart.

If the old IDM was falling apart, and it only does this in the rain, then I'd start looking at the drivers front wheel well liner and the fender liner under the hood. The IDM is hidden between these two things, kind of behind the F250 badge on the fender. The IDM has a circuit board in it that doesn't react well with water. If there's a hole or crack letting water up in there it could be causing your (his) problems.

Your boyfriend don't happen to spend a lot of time creek jumping and pond hopping does he? Welcome to the site and if it seems like we ask a lot of questions, that's the only way we have of knowing the truck. So, Welcome to the site, have a little patience and someone here will help get it running right again.
