2000 exp. leather covered stock steering wheel is leaking some sort of black substance. It gets on your hands and it is originating inside the leather cover and coming out along the laces. It appears to be only on about one have the circumference of the wheel. Can a steering wheel melt from sunlight?
Uh oh, you know it's bad news when that black stuff starts leaking out. I'm sure glad I'm not you. I wonder if it could be from the air bag, but those are sealed.
Yep it is here to on my 2001 expy when it is hot outside and on our 1983 Lightning, it is the Ford ooze.
Steering wheel cover only works for so long than the ooze is back.
Sorry have not found solution either.
My best guess is that its the adhesive the bonds the inside of the leather wrap together. I would suggest getting a nice simple steering wheel cover. If it was mine, I would get a new or salvage yard steering wheel. The leather steering wheels are nice, but they always go to pot. One would think that Ford or any other car maker could make them better.
I think some of the import cars have better leather steering wheels, but thats just a thought. I can't verify that its just what I have seen.
