Setting timing

Hey, new to the forum and saying hello also.

I am acquiring a 90 f150 with a 5.0, but the previous owner's mechanically challenged son decided to tinker with the disty. So, I need to know, if there is a how to on timing the 5.0 engine, because at current time the vehicle doesnt run due to the timing issue, so i think the disty could be 180 off.

Any help would be great, and am an automotive tech, so tech lingo i will get.

you need to disconnect your spout, timing should be 10* advance when engine warm at idle!

If you think it may be 180 out, you can either bump the engine over until the balancer is lined up at 0* with the pointer, or you can bump the engine over with the #1 spark plug out, and feel for when both valves are closed and the piston comes to TDC. The second way is the fool proof way though. then you line the dizzy rotor with the #1 spot on the cap. From there, you disconnect the spout connector, and set the timing accordingly.

I'm probably gonna get in trouble for this post....but if you're an 'automotive tech,' shouldn't you know how to find top dead center on an engine all by yourself? Techies have manuals, after all.

This is laughable...
