How do I release the hydraulic hose from the clutch slave cylinder ?

I want to remove the transmission on a 91 F-150 w/4spd manual and 4.9 L inline 6cy., but I have to release the hydraulic hose from the clutch slave cylinder. Is a special tool required. It doesn't look like some of the others that use a concentric tool to release the hose. This is a concentric slave that rides on the trans. input shaft. I need to get this hose off before I take the bellhousing bolts out.

You have the internal slave cylinder with the line going through a hole in the side of the bellhousing, correct? If so, you need to push the white plastic ring in toward the transmission to release the line. There is a special fork shaped release tool designed just for this purpose, but it you are careful enough you can work it in with a screwdriver. Just don't damage the ring, or you'll be SOL.
A word of warning, these can be a real pain to get apart sometimes. I've seen them so badly corroded removal was all but impossible. In cases like that I've had to either unbolt the master and remove the tranny with the master and line attached, or break the fitting off of the slave and carefully cut away the sleeve.

If you have the externally mounted slave, you have to drive the roll pin out to remove the line.

If you don't have the proper tool, it's easier if you have someone push on the plastic sleeve using the flat part of two flat blade screwdrivers and the other person pull on the line.

Here's what the tool looks like.

When you push in on the plastic sleeve, it pushes away some springy metal fingers which allows you to pull the hose off.

Slave Cylinder Tool

Some clutch assemblies come with a new tool for the fluid line.

I just found one in the box with a slave cylinder at the parts store, but this tool is hard to find hanging on the shelf in a display if you don't plan to change the slave. If you plan to change out a clutch on a vehicle it really makes sense to change the slave too because if you don't and the slave fails later on the transmission has to come out again and the slave on this truck is $50. Not worth the tradeoff.

slave cyd, tool

That,s just the way it is, they used to not even supply the tool, but as you see what every body was rigging to release the line, you could ruin the little barbs inside the fitting.
