Im thinking about getting an older diesel ford and im lookin for either the older 6.9 straight 6 or the 7.3 powerstroke turbo diesel V8. My question is which is better and can you get the 6.9 with a turbo on it?
6.9L is a v8, not inline 6, and there aren't really any feasible turbo type of kits for it, and it's pretty pokey. The 7.3 on the other hand is an absolute beast. I would go with the 7.3 over a 6.9 in a heart beat.
The 6.9 and 7.3 IDI's are good, solid engines although somewhat of a turd on power. There are aftermarket turbo kits available from companies like ATS, Banks, and Hypermax for these engines, but they will never compete with the Powerstroke. Ford did offer a factory 7.3 IDI turbo package I believe from '93 through mid '94 until the Powerstroke was introduced.
I have a '92 with a naturally aspirated 7.3 IDI and I love it. Its no powerhouse, but for a full size truck it gets excellent fuel economy. I normally average at least 18 miles per gallon on the highway with it. Too bad diesel is over $4 a gallon now.
I have a 1990 F-250 460 4X4 right now how does that stack up against the 7.3 powerstroke turbo diesel...460vs444 turbo diesel?.....without factoring gas mileage :/
