Paint question...was the original stuff lacquer?

I'm in the process of disassembling my 65 f100 and getting ready to have it painted....one paint guy said that he thought the original paint on it was lacquer....and that I'd need to strip the entire truck in and out to get good adhesion and no orange peel...did these trucks have lacquer originally? Any want to seal that and put more modern paint over the top?

No lacquer, they were painted with enamel.

I would have some reservation about your paint guy, he should have known that lacquer doesn't hold up very well out in the elements.

Thanks guys...I thought is was likely enamel....if I'm two toning the car (rangoon red and wimbeldon white) does the interior and jams need to be the red (same as the lower part of the car)?

Depends on the quality of the paint job, and what you are willing to pay for.

Short answer, yes. IMHO

these were enamel as stated by others above...as for painting detail...if you want a totally correct tutone paint job...I would try to find on either in a wrecking yard, or from a memember on here who can document where it gets masked/color split areas...I would show you mine, but mine is tutone white...
I believe though that the white goes on 1st and the red tops it...

Acrylic enamel was what Ford used on cars and trucks.

dumb question...but isnt the acylic whats used to give it the toughness...and thus made the OE paint survive 40 yrs when taken care of...kinda like a plastic type part of the paint...

Isn't "Acrylic" like another name for latex or non oil??

No laquer if it is not kept in a climate control room. There are many other choices to use today.

"Acrylic" is just the Vehicle, or the liquid part of the Paint. Helps with flow and even application, Most Acrylic's are waterborne nowadays.

I would recommend a base coat clear coat or a single stage color. Probably go with a bccc if you're going with a two tone color.

I got some pictures of a original 66 custom cab two tone this weekend from the supernats, the pics I have show some of the paint break lines on the hood and firewall, if you might be interested I could email them to you or post them.
