90s 302 vs. 351w

Hi, I saving to buy a 90 - 94 ford truck. I was wondering what are the specs for the 302 and the 351w through 1990 and 1994. I've heard that in 1992 Ford made some changes that reduced some horsepower off the engines. But not sure about that. I just want a truck that will bark those tires and get decent mileage on highways. Any other info would be much appreciated. Thanks

90s 302 vs. 351w

The 351w had around 200hp and 310ftlbs of tq.

As far as milage goes, you gears won't matter unless you consistently travel faster than 60mph. Beleive it or not the size of the engine doesn't matter that much either. What ultimatly determines you milage is the weight of you truck. If you get a f-150 4x2 regular cab short bed with a manual transmission, you have the best milage possible. Also, automatics eat about 1/12 more power than manuals do.

A recomendation would be to get the lightest possible truck with the 351, a manual, and highway gears (3.55s). Remeber that 4x4s are heavier and so are all the extras you get with xlt and lariat packages. The 351 will give you the extra power when you need it and not make a difference on your mileage.

Example: My truck gets 10-11 mpg in town. My friends father runs a business with a 4x2 F-250 460 auto. He gets 10-11 mpg in town. The lighter truck was offset by the automatic.

Hope this helps.

Sound System: Stock Stereo, RockfordFosgate 800 watt amp, Vega 18" sub (400 watt rms), one Cerwin-Vega LS-12 3 way floor speaker with the Vega sub removed (because I blew it) and a RockfordFosgate 12" sub (500 watt rms) in its place. And one Boise floor speaker with a 75 watt power capacity (you know it ain’t gonna last).

Performance Mods: K&N Air Filter.

Cosmetic Mods: Black Grill Guard, 5% window tint, bug guard, bed liner.

1994 is the best year for Ford engines. Why? Because that was the first year of Mass air on Auto-equipped trucks. 1990-1991 302's had 185hp and 270ft/lbs of torque. The 351's had 210hp and 315ft/lbs of torque. The 1992-1993 302's had 195hp and 270ft/lbs torque. Daywalker is right about the 351. Then in 1994 the mass air 302's had 205hp and 275ft/lbs of torque. The 351 had 210hp and 325ft/lbs of torque.

The 351 is a real work motor. I believe it's a must on a 4x4 truck. It's not a good mpg truck though. Then you should go with the 302.
