I have a problem with my 1993 ranger 2.3 About a week ago it started
this thing where you have to press the gas pedal all the way to the floor for it to start moving, and it would be hard to get out of the way of a horse and wagon if I had to do it fast. I have changed the fuel filter that was only a month old and did a pressure test on the fuel pump and it was 38 lbs. Changed the TPS yesterday and still same problem. It is a 5 spd. What else could cause this problem? I ran some sea foam thru the Booster Vac line, but I didn't clean the throttle body even tho it had some black build up inside.
Is there another sensor that could cause this problem. btw I had the timing belt changed about 2 months ago. About to run out of options. Mileage is 207,000 but well taken care of.
I am new to Fords, it sounds like you are not throwing a code, no check engine light, and you've checked the fuel pressure, you may want to check the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). Also, check for vacuum leaks, and weak spark, I'm not sure if you would have coil packs or distributor. You may also want to check the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) and EGR also. It also may be possible you have clogged fuel injectors. One last thing it may sound silly, but check your brakes, make sure there not dragging heavily.
I would start with the TPS though since it sounds like you have no codes.
Also remove the rubber plugs in the timing cover and get the engine on TDC and just make sure all the marks line up and the belt has not jumped a tooth. A jumped belt will give the problems you mention also, engines idles ok, but no power. Its easy to inspect the marks and would eleminate one more thing. The converter would be a good thing to check, it could be stopped up. See if the exhaust pipe going into the converter is a lot hotter than coming out of the conveter. My freinds 2.3 stopped up and his pipe was cherry red from the manifold to the converter after a trip from town.
I replaced the Throttle Position Sensor and the Mass Airflow Sensor and gave up and took it to a shop that I trust and it took them one day and a new harmonic balancer to cure the problem. One odd thing, my fuel gauge has never worked, but in trying to solve my problem, I used sea foam in my engine, oil pan and fuel tank and when I got it from the shop yesterday the gauge is working fine. Don't know if it was a moisture problem with it or what.
But thanks for the responses folks.
