Help! I just put in a newly rebuilt 351W on my 1983 Ford Bronco and I KNOW it is correctly installed (well for the most part). When I try to start the engine the starter kicks in but "jams". It is almost like the flexplate is stuck because when I put a breaker bar on the engine I can't even turn the crank.
1) Is it the block?
No the engine crank turned when I put on the harmonic balancer.
Ok so, this is vague and perhaps there are many solutions, I just don't want to pull out the engine again.
Did you try to crank the engine with the spark plugs out? Is the truck in gear? You obviously have something binding up. Give us some more information!
Make sure the transmission and block are tight against each other. If there is any gap especially on the starter side the starter will bind. Drop the starter and look up from the bottom to see if there is any gap. Also look at the starter and see if there are any marks from the flex plate making contact with it.
Just a thought but are your torque convertor bolts through the flex plate and tight? Are you using the original starter? Manual and auto. starters are different I think.
