2006 Ticking when started

Hey all, my wife's 06 Escape XLT makes a ticking noise when it is started. Sounds like a lifter kinda', and continues as she back out of the driveway. Once it's in drive, and she takes off (usually like a bat out of hell) the noise is gone. when she comes back, it's still gone. She uses the partial synthetic 5w20, and gets it changed regularly, yet she only has 9000 miles on it. Any ideas?

Your oil filter isn't orange by any chance, is it?

There have been many people, myself included, who have noticed that the ticking starts only after installing a Fram oil filter and goes away when it is changed to another brand.

Try a Motorcraft filter at your next oil change and see what happens.

Good luck.

I said it "sounded" like a lifter. But to assuage you, yes, some overhead cam engines have lifters to cushion the action just like an older engine.

Are u serious about the Fram? My 02 has a hundred and a half with the same noise. I think I mighta put a Fram on it this time. I usually use Wix. Mt mom bought this filter while she was in town. I never liked 'em myself. What is their main malfunction???

I really couldn't remember. I've had both apart in the past but fortunately its been quite a few years since I had to dig into an engine.

The Motorcraft filter has a "check valve" in it that prevents the oil in the top of the motor from draining down preventing a "dry" start (ticking). And yes, overhead cam motors have lifters..I just replaced all of them on my 2001 (ticking no more).

A Fram filter will not assure that it ticks, why do I say this? Because there is a TSB out that says you need to retorque the camshaft caps on the exhaust side in a particular sequence and to a new torque to get rid of the noise. I have run fram filters on every ford out there and never once got a tick from them.

My 2005 escape had a crack in the exhaust manifold that made a ticking noise like you described. The problem was covered by the warranty.
