Exclamation In need of gears, need suggestions

i am new here andi have a 2002 f-350 ( non dually) 4x4. i have 37 inch parnelli jones tires and i hate how it is a little sluggish in 2nd gear. i have the stock 3.73 gears in it now any suggestions on what i should get and where to get them from?

What type of work do you do with your truck? What weights to you tow and what type of trailers.

If you do just occasional towing (under 10k), then you might be best suited with 4.30 gearing.

If you tow often, then the 4.88 gearing may meet your needs. Those 37" tires throw your ratio way too high with 3.73's, imo.

Give us some idea how you're going to be working your truck.

4.56 from Randys Ring and Pinion. I'd put in limited slip or locking differentials at the same time since you'll have the axle housings opened up anyway.

4:88s minimum IMO. I'd ditch the stock LS rear diff too if you do any offroading or driving in snow, add a better posi.

37's and 3:73s will make the truck feel like a slug. Even 4.30s and 37s will feel sluggish.

i use to do a lot of towing before i put the big tires on but i have an 04 f350 deisel i use for towing now. i mainly just use this truck to drive around and do a little off roading in. but when i do tow i have a 873 bobcat and a few tons of rock on it.

Id deff go with 4.88's. That should give you more torque. Also, you wont save any money by switching to 4.56's. 4.56 and 4.88 are about the same in cash.

4:88 gears with 37" tires is equivlent to 4.22 gears with 32" tires.

I would say 4:88s would be almost a perfect match.

That almost puts you at 4.30s. Which is good because that combo+the v-10 = alot of torque.

X2

I'm running 4.56s with stock tires and love the performance. I recommend 4.88s-5.13s as a minimum.

The 4.56 or 4.88 will help get those 37" tires rolling a lot easier! Since you wheel your SuperDuty...might go with ARB front and rear...or at a minimum go with a TrueTrac LS in the rear.

Using the calculator on that site, 4.88 with 37" is almost identical to my stock 4.1 265/70/17 (31") tires. I'd go with that or step up one to the 5.13 which is simular to my tires with 4.3 and I wouldn't mind a bit more gear.

4.88s bare minimum... if you want a little more "fun" go 5.13... won't cost you a whole lot in the fuel mileage department doing so.

BTW, I would be willing to bet you a beer that your fuel mileage will improve by proper regearing anyhow!
