Just bought 08 Saturday!! Need Advice...
I've had an 03 dually with the last of the 7.3's, an 05 with a 6.0 that ran great but got unbelievably bad mpg, then in Feb of 07 I ordered and bought an 07 F150 FX4 Supercrew long bed....
Then--4 weeks ago I bought a toyhauler (24' long, 4300 pounds empty, 5500-6000 loaded) thinking that the F150 with the 5.4 would tow it OK.
I live in New Mexico and travel from one end of the state to the other going out into the desert to race MX bikes. We are at 5000 feet here in Albuquerque and travel up and down the mountains and have to tow from 7500 feet to 3500 feet.
The 16th and 17th I towed my new trailer to Alamogordo for a race. Of course, I had headwinds going and coming back, and from Socorro to Albuquerque on Sunday the headwinds were 40-50 mph. The F150 was pinned at 4300rpm in 2nd gear for 50-60 miles solid. I couldn't get to the speed limit of 75mph, 70mph was all it could do. Going to the race, with the throttle floored, the speed dropped from 60 to 45 and was still dropping when I made it to the top of the grade!!
So---Even though I'm a little slow in the head it occurred to me that I might want to take another look at a diesel. The turbo's really help make up for the high altitude here, and I was tired of being a rolling road block. On some of the uphill mountain grades they have passing lanes, I would pull over and diesels with bigger trailers than mine would blast by me like I was in park...
I did research in the various forums, and I went and test drove an 08 GMC with the Duramax/Allison combo twice. I wanted to like it...really. But there were so many things about it that just felt cheap to me, that when I got back into my F150 I felt like I was getting into a Rolls Royce. (The GMC MSRP was $50,830)
So, I went over to my friendly Ford dealer after searching his inventory, and drove a F250 4x4 CC Short Bed Lariat...but this one was all black, no 2-tone, and loaded with the works....From the moment you lower the tailgate and close it, or just sit in the drivers seat, you realize the quality of the truck is so much better than the GMC that you feel bad for even testing one.
It had me at as soon as I put it in drive....So I pulled the trigger!
Here are my questions---
1) I want to add a "Transfer Flow" brand fuel tank to the bed. Does anyone know if I will get CEL's? Any other issues? I want to order their new 40 gallon toolbox combo unit soon. (It can be a long way between diesel stations in NM)
2) I have about 5 gallons of Shell Rotella T Synthetic (Blue Bottle) left over from the 05 6.0 days. Can I use it in the 6.4?
3) I have 2 Motorcraft oil filters left over from the 05 6.0, will they fit the 6.4?
4) The printout from the factory says the truck was built 1-7-2008. Is this a "Job 3" build I have been reading about?
5) The manual says I need 500-1000 miles of break in before towing. Are you guys just cruising around to break in or doing highway miles?
6) Will I notice any improvement towing my trailer?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
Item #3 - Yes you can use the same oil filter
Item #5 - I break them in the way I am going to drive them. Old school thinking but have never had any problem. Change the oil 1st time @ 1,000 to 1,500 miles.
On the oil-
What is on the market that is CJ-4?
I looked at Shell's web site and didn't see either Rotella as a CJ-4.
I assume the Motorcraft oil from Ford is CJ-4, but I always like to use synthetic, for emotional reasons.
Thanks for the feedback so far...

The Rotella synthetic is not currently CJ rated. You will find several dino oils that are CJ rated including Rotella, Dello, Mobil Delvac 1300, etc.
I just purchased today 4 gallons (1 - case) of Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W40 from the local Mobil Oil Distributor for $102.92 plus tax.
Here is a link on the fully synthetic Delvac 1 ESP 5W40:

I found the Delvac 1 (w/o the ESP nomenclature) at the local Petro truck lube center but it is not CJ rated for our 08 6.4 PSD.
You have plenty of time to get your oil for your new truck, so you might want to consider one of the links in the first thread I pasted and just order it over the Internet.
Congratulations on your new truck, I'm sure you will not be disappointed in the towing performance.
