Can anyone tell me what diff this is? 8.8 or 9 inch.
It's in an 89 F150, 302 5spd, but the local F truck parts guy says it's not the original diff as it's had angle brackets welded underneath it to accomodate the lower shock mounts. Diff has no tag but has a 61 on the large casting.
That was definitely not stock for your truck. It looks like a 9" to me and I think they stopped using those in the early to mid 80's trucks. I think 1985 was the last year, could be wrong but it was around then that they went to the 8.8 axle. I say looks like a 9" because ford also had an 8" axle that looked similar to the 9", but I don't think it was used in trucks so it wouldn't have been wide enough. Your axle is not an 8.8 though. They are very different in appearance.

Yeah, that's definitely a 9". Also definitely not stock for your truck. The hand-bent brake lines over the top of the center section help give it away.
What's wrong with the hand fabbed brake lines?
What are those things sticking down from the axle tubes?
Yeah...gotta love the "backyard" jobs some idiots do. Have been continually fixing things since I got it cos someone's REALLY bodgied up certain things on it.
Those bits under the axle tubes are heavy wall angle iron that someone has welded on to fix the lower shock link to. WTF!!! Bush mechanics! Scary thing is that it still passed a roadworthy inspection like that ?????
Thanks guys
