Future of the Ranger?

Have been hearing conflicting rumors about the Ranger lately. Heard that Ford wants to pull the plug on the Ranger. Also heard that there will be a new series for the 2010 model year with diesel power. Anybody know what the real future of the Ranger is? It would be a big mistake for Ford to abandon this segment of the market, no matter how unprofitable it may be right now. On the other hand- a diesel Ranger in 2010? Awesome idea! Couldn't Ford certify then simply import it's UK Ranger diesel variant now?

The ranger is dead after the 09? model year and will be replaced with an f100, basically moving up to dakota sized truck. Kinda a dumb move with the new cafe regulations if you ask me but if they can sell more trucks that way I guess its good for them. Not sure on a diesel but its always a possibility especially since the dakota is supposed to get one.

No diesel as of yet, but the F-100 will have a V-8 option. Change is hard, but I hear the new F-100 is so much better than the current ranger and people will love it and it's not a whole lot bigger on the outside, but loads more interior room. The owner of my dealership went up to Detroit for a new product review and they were discussing the F-100. He said it sorta looks like a mini F-150, very sharpe, so thats as much as I've been told.

This F100 sounds pretty cool but I was kind of hoping for a little smaller, not a little bigger. If the gas mileage stays at least the same or even a little better, I'm still on board (my 01 Ranger could be replaced in another year or two). Do you think dropping the Ranger nameplate and calling it an F100 is a manuever to pad sales figures and keep the "F series" a top seller? Are there any spy photos out there? Sure wish there was a diesel on the horizon....

Oh, say it isn't so! Just looked on F150.net, and they are reporting a rumor that the new F-100 will be a unibody, like the Honda Ridgeline. That may make it a fine vehicle, but not for what I'd use it for. Anybody hear more? Did the dealer comment on the unibody thing?

Yeah, I also read where the F-100 is a unibody plateform, but it's not as bad as it sounds. I've owned 2 jeep comanche p/u's, they were unidody and very sturdy. You couldn't even tell by looking under it sd they had full framing, it's just the cab was welded to the frame. Of course any new fords will be getting better mpg, the F-100 included, thats why the unibody, to make it lighter but yet sturdy.

Will it still have the 2.3? I loved that engine in my old '03. I also heard that it will have the new 3.5. Any truth to that?

I'm going to keep my '06 until the wheels fall off, and pass it down to my younger daughter when she is driver age in about 2012. I love the 3.0 with the 4:10 rear end on it.

The 2.3 duratec is getting bumped up to a 2.5 170 hp in the near future. The mustang is getting the 3.5 instead of the current 4.0 as will the new cross over explorer, so I can't see ford keeping the 4.0 around for just 1 vehicle, so I'm sure the F-100 will have the 3.5. I could see it having a V-8, the 3.5 V-6 and a 4 cylinder.

I feel the same way, if it isn't broke, don't fix it. All the current ranger needs is a crew cab option to keep most people happy. A 4 cylinder diesel would it back at number 1 I'm sure. The over sea's rangers get a diesel, why couldn't we get it here? A crewcab diesel ranger would be the ticket for sales sucess.

i dont even think they need a diesel...acura and other imports make over 300 hp out of a smaller V6 than the rangers....get more power out of the 4.0 option a small V8 give it a crewcab and for god sakes get rid of the torsion bars and put coil overs up front

in 09 or 2010 the V6 mustangs are going to be pumpin 260hp i think even closer to 300 with the 4.0 and the GT 4.6L will have over 300...the mustangs 4.0 is the same as the rangers give it some of the ponies!

I don't care about a diesel, but seems like a lot of truck guy's do. A diesel option in anything sells like hot cakes. When they put a diesel in the jeep liberty they couldn't keep them on the lots. The mustang is going to be getting the new 3.5 V-6, that motor makes 263 hp stock and the linclon's are getting a twin turbo version with over 300 hp, the hp of a V-8 and mpg of a V-6.

Diesel Ranger is reality in Europe. Duratorq 2.5 is not an option here, but the most popular engine.... Auto is option

if you want a diesel in a pick up buy a superduty....there is no need for there to be a diesel in a ranger....no ranger can tow over 6,000lbs anyway most are less than that.
