Do you put something in front of your rad?

I don't since it blows nice warm air the way it is, but do any of you guys put a winterfront or cardboard or whatever in front of your rad? My temp. guage warmed up driving on the highway sits at about a needle width into the "normal operating range". Even though this still blows me warm air should I have something in front to let it get warmer. Would that get me a little better mileage or no difference?

Thanks

I don`t put anything in front of the rad but do use a weather front on the grill.
If your getting good in cab heat then it`s probably fine, I doubt it would help fuel economy.

I just use my stainless bug screen year round. It slows the cold blast of air to the rad. Lots of guys here just zip tie cardboard from their favorite brand of beer box!!!

The 93 seems to be heating up fairly well, my International I put a cardboard box in front of the rad in my highschool days.

A side from running hotter, is there any benifit to covering the amount of air flowing thru the rad?

(I live in the Lower Rainland, where winter is 90% of the year on the plus side of the thermometer)

one thing i notice is that these aluminum component engines certainly don't hold their heat likt the old cast. i think if i did a pile of highway driving i would definately invest in a winter front, but it works good for me right now...

I dont use a winter front on any of my vehicles. My 89 could use it a few times, but I dont really use it that often on long trips anymore.

I have found that with the newer vehicles they dont seem to need them. My PSD does fine on the highway when its cold and the temp stays normal, and same thing with the civic.

My van has one, the 59 the rad was totally blanked off and the C*** I don't have but could use one.
I think rad covers are from older days when vehicles had larger rad areas, and not nearly as cramped engine compartments where the wind would blow thru right to the firewall.
When i did drive the 59 in winter i had a heavy blanket to cover then engine each night to keep the block heater heat in the engine.

I have the cloud rider summer grille inserts, and just take them off and tape the backside off with duct tape. It looks kinda white behind it and it works well. Just peel the tape off in the spring. Use it on both the gas and diesel and they seem to warm up a little quicker...

Being that I work up a ski hill (about 3000 ft up) should I think about covering my grill? Would I gain anything by it? What are the pro's/cons?

Just keeps the cold air out of the engine bay and lets it warm up quicker

dustin's basically told it like it is... keeps some cold air from blasting right on your rad... keeps the engine warmer, thus the interior will keep warmer.
