Hi all,
I have a 78 short bed 300 I6 with a 3 spd. contemplating dropping a 302 in it as the I6 is real slow. It'll tow good but it's slow, real slow. Would a 2 bbl carb, and a high flow muffler make a big difference? I've heard that the manifold off of later 300's is actually a header. Is this true? If so can I put it on my truck? The 300's got 120 000 miles on it and it runs good, just don't like the power and the non V8 sound
Hey man, I'm just going to give you the generic answer, you'll probably get from most people, so here it goes. First, slap on a Thrush glass pack,(not thrust, thrush) hack off the cat. converter, if legal in your state. Two, slap on a K&N airfilter. Three, tune up the engine, new spark plugs, WITH the proper gap, a whole new ignition system would be nice too. That is what I would do with out opening up the engine too much. Now this Winter, I'm going to rebuild my engine, put on every thing above, but I'm also going to put on headers, bore it out .030 over, and hack off everything that has to do with the exhaust, including any mufflers, and cat. converters, so it's just a pipe, coming from the engine. (My dad's best friend runs an inspection station) I also have some other things planned for my 300, but I'm not going to give away all of my secrets... :-)

Hey, I'm also a 2nd LT and as a fellow officer I find it very upsetting that you would withhold secrets. I thought officers are supposed to stick together. How does that 6 soud with thrush mufflers?
Hey brother, which branch? I'm Air Force / Civil Air Patrol. Of course I'm just a cadet though. hehehe
By the way, you're talkin' to the new 1st Lt.! I passed all of my requirements!
Any how, you're right, us officers have to stick together!
My so called "secret" was to just port the heads, get a high performance cam, and get a heavy duty crank. There is some more that I know I want to do, but I can't quite remember it!
Anyhow, this isn't my best debrief, but this is all I can do...

PS. I don't have any exhaust, it's just a pipe, the way I wanted it. (my dad's best friend runs an inspection station) It sounds bad A$$ too!
Well to answer your question yes the EFI 300s came with shorty cast headers with dual outlets just like the 406s of yore. Yes a 2barrel carb( i would suggest a 1.08 autolite 2100) would help especially if you cammed it some too. just my two cents

1.small block chevy valves. 1.60 exhaust and 1.96 intake---i think its that or 1.60 inatake 1.06 exhaust
2. summit, comp, or crane truck cam
3. efi manifolds
4. holley 450 cfm or edlebrock 500 cfm. depends if your a holley man or eldlebrock man
5. rearend gears. 3.73s are great
6. every one doesnt seem to seem a differense with K&N's i guess its not worth it
7. roller rockers. theres a set made for the 300
8. offenhouser has a good intake manifold for the 300.
most bang for your buck would come in re-working the head with some porting, concentrate on the bowls more than the ports. the head is the weakest part of the 240-300, better manifolds, and more carburetion will help with the power, but it's really no use in trying to force more air and fuel down something that can't breathe well anyways isn't going to have the same effect as getting it to breathe better throughout the system
consider going with the head off a 240, they had smaller chambers so the CR will get bumped up a bit
3-angle valve job, and the Chevy 250ci or Ford 3.8L rocker arms will complete it
figures it would take an enlisted man to tell a couple officers how to do something correctly...
E4 Comm guy, currently in Kuwait
nah, if he was a cadet, he should be in for about 8 years or so...
should be lookin at Capt if he hasn't already hit that, Major takes a while longer though
and i'm gonna blame johnboy, cause he resurrected it
s'not my fault at all...
