Does anyone know if the 4.9 MAF can be changed to an after market unit built for a Mustang.
The electrical connections look the same, but that really does'nt mean much when it comes to computers.
I just don't think the stock MAF will be able to handle my future upgrades.
If you don't know for sure, then your opinions are very welcome.
What matters on the MAF sensor is calibration. It has to match the injectors. You're looking at going from the stock 12# units, running at 14# to either 19s or 24s. For 19s, your best bet is probably the MAF out of a 96 5.0 truck. It is a flanged meter so it will either bolt up to or be easily adapted to your air box and the wire numbers, etc of the connections to the processor are identical. What happens internally in the PCM, who knows? I'd bet that the late-model Mustang meter (I'd stick with a 96 because of the OBD-II thing) would work as well, they're flanged unlike the earlier ones, but I cannot confirm the wire connections.
I talked to Pro-M about this and they'll recalibrate a stock meter for $100
