My recently aquired 1 1/2 ton '35 has a radio shack toggle switch to crank/shut off the engine! (besides the foot pedal to actually power the starter) I don't think it's origional equip. What is missing here? There is a lock on the steering column but the cylinder is gone. I'm told that was the only key hole in the interior. How did they turn the truck off? What about dash lights? There is another toggle switch "fitted" to the bottom of the dash. Trying to "keep it real" origional. Thanks for any help!
The toggle switch on the bottom of the dash was for the dash lights.
The key powered the foot pedal for the starter, and the coil. When the key was turned off the power was shut off to the ignition system - thus the engine stopped.
Someone replaced the key switch with the RS toggle switch. If I'm reading you right. Doesn't sound like anything is missing.
So the toggle switch for the dash lights was origional?
And you say there was a key switch for the ignition. Was it on the dash or was it wired into that lock on the steering column with the missing cylinder?
I mostly mess around with 48-52's, but as far as I know the toggle on the dash was original - my 48 has one and Mac's catalog shows them as replacements.
Also I understand the key ignition was on the column. Sorry I'm not more help. Check into fordbarn.com There are a bunch of old timers over there who can answer your questions.
My 46 ton and one half also has a miniature toggle under the dash that runs the dash lights. I always thought it was something that my Grandfather engineered. We learn something new every day. Anyway, my truck has a key on the column and a factory installed toggle switch near the key. The key only unlocks the steering wheel and the toggle switch. There are no wires going to it. Without the key on, the toggle switch is locked in the off position. The toggle switch supplies power to the ignition. The truck has a push button on the left side of the dash that runs the starter.
