Hey, I'm new here. I have a 1994 Ford F-150 with the 4.9 300 I6 with a 5spd. I want to go with an aftermarket exhuast system. I really extremely DO NOT want the rice burner sound. It pisses me off just typing those words. What exhuast system or mufflers can I go with that will give me a little extra power but a better sound than factory but not rice burner sound? I know I won't get the V8 rumble but my goal is to find a system that will give me a little extra hp and a nice sound. I had rather go with a system that gives zero extra power but has a nice sound rather than to go with a system that gives a little extra hp but the the rice burner sound.
Also, what other small mods can I do that will hop up my truck on the high end? As for the low end it has more torque than I need but that is fine by me. Burning 31's with 3.08's is not a problem at all. Keep up with my friends 318 is, and its the slowest V8 made right now. I know that to beat him, I would have to go with a bigger cam and a better head. I don't want to go inside the engine screw with anything on the inside. I was thinking of doing the following mods:
What kind of gain should I see with these mods? I know it won't be able to beat or even keep up with the 318 but what difference should I be able to see? What chip would you recomend that I go with? I know I've asked alot of questions, but I hope you will answer some of them.
I cannot give a definitive number on the mods you have listed but I would guess maybe 15-20 hp at the most on a good day. You would get a better throttle response and maybe a few more miles per gallon though.
As far as exhaust I was in the same mindset as yourself. I went with in house (generic) turbos and clifford dual headers. I am happy with it. If I drive normally it is fine nice rumble, if I get on it, it gets somewhat loud just not that loud and it doesn't sound like a v-6 with duals at all. Soem people think dual in/ dual out flowmasters are fine 40 series kind of quiet I believe someone said they wished they went with the 50 series but were still happy with the 40 series. I will stress if you want a v-8 sound you are not going to find it, but you will get a good sound from the inline 6. Good luck hope you find a sound you can live with.
Probably the BEST mod for power you can do is swapping in the 19# fuel injectors from a 5.0L. If you look around, you can find the injectors cheap from a 5.0L Mustang guy who upgraded to 24# units (I got a set of 8 for $50). Look through the posts on here and you'll find all the info you need on the swap, including a complete parts list.
Of Course, to get full benefit you should definitely go with a good exhaust system and open up the intake. I got the Flowmaster Force II System and is has a nice tone to it. Its only slightly louder than stock, and has a nice deep tone between 2000 and 3000rpm when you're getting on it. I'd also suggest dumping the stock dual cats in favor of a single hi-flow unit. Catco makes one that you can get through Summit for $49.95 that is 3" in/out to match the Flowmaster system, but you'll need to have a local muffler shop custom bend you new piping from the manifolds to the cat.
For the intake, go with the K&N FIPK Kit. The stock intake system is really restrictive and this kit replaces the stock airbox.
As for the MSD Ignition, go for it. I installed on on my truck and saw a slight increase in milage, and the engine seemed to pull a little more in the upper rpm's. Just make sure whatever plug wires you get are NOT solid core, as the MSD is not compatable with these and it will cause a nasty miss.

I too have a single 3" Hi-flow cat with 2.5" single in/out 40 Series Flowmaster with stock exhaust headers. It has a nice burble at idle and although doesn't sound like a V8 it doesn't sound like a bumble bee either. The exhaust pipes dumps out back at the stock location. Good sound from a 300. Oh, I have an 85 F150 2wd.
Hello,
On my '83 300, I've got a single in/dual out flowmaster 40 series. One thing I did was run 2" tailpipes. Therefore from 1200 to 2200 rpms it sounds just like a V8 and while cruising at 1800 rpm you wouldnt know it wasnt a V8. When I lug it at about 1200, it's got a flowmaster sound mixed with an almost glasspack like pop. I love it and wouldnt have any other sound or any other motor than my stock 300.

Well, on my truck, I have 2½" duals, no mufflers, and, there is no mistaking it for a V8, or anything else, have a listen to some of the sounds on my page(http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/mtflemm.mac/fordpage/trucks.html), the closer to the bottom they are, the newer they are. No rice burner sound here, if I make it pull just right at ~2000 rpm, it sounds akin to a Detroit 2 stroke diesel... And, rice burners don't have anything that resembles a lumpy idle, or power for that matter...

I have a 88 with the same motor and went throught the same thing you did It sounded like a honda so I made some changes to my exhust I have made my own exhhust I put an loud glass pack on
It made more horse power DO NOT GUT OR REMOVE THE CONVERTER this will make it sound terible make the exhust as long as possible out the back if possible this will actuly give it a rumble not like a v8 but a pertty cool one especlaiy when shifting
also you may not belive me but put two or three moth ***** in your air box this will give you more power and throttle response

I have a 95' Inline Six 300 with a Gibson Dual Sport Cat-back and it sounds awesome. Definitely the best sounding 6 I have ever heard, but thats cuz it's from the good ol USA and it's a good size 6. It doesn't sound as good revving as a V-8 but it has a deep throaty sound to it, no whimpy rice burner there.

i gutted my converter and no muffler with a y pipe to split it and dummy duals out at the corners of the bed and it sounds great kinda like a dump truck is what people have told me and it is not annoyinly loud either but that is just my opion.
One of the 16 year old kids showed up at church with his little 61 Ranchero with a 170 in 6 Sunday. He had finally finished it. It is beautiful. But what was really different was, it sounded like he had a HP 289 in it. Nope, still the 170. Stock manifold, long 2" pipe back to a cherry bomb, and a short 3" megaphone. Best "sounding" 6 I've ever heard. (Runs pretty good too.) Herman
Hey Herman,
What exactly do you mean by a megaphone? A big tip?
