Redneck fixes and upgrades

what are some of the odd things you have done to fix or improve your superduty(or any other truck)?

I'll start...
-my buddies 99 SD's bumper got destroyed the day before his inspection(u need a bumper to pass) so we took a telephone pole i had trimed it up and then bolted it up to the front end...It looked real nasty!

When trying to rebuild a friend of mine's 86? Ranger, he hadn't bought the bench seat yet, so we bolted a metal folding chair to the floor so we could test drive the thing. Had to cut the legs, then used some scrap sheet metal and bolts to kinda hold it in one general location. Don't worry, it never went further then the front gate, but it's weird to be sliding on the floor next to a driver in a folding chair. Wish we coulda tacked it down with a welder, that might have kept it more in one place, but it was only temporary.

I had an 87 Olds Cutlass Calais GT that had a bad alternator and the battery died when I was out riding around. It wouldnt take a jump so I had to use a spare battery. I couldn't get the dead battery out cuz the clamp that held it in was to rusted. I was able to connect the good battery to the cables so I just flipped it upside down and sat it on the dead battery. I closed the hood as far as it would go and attempted to drive home. Eventually the wind caught the hood and slammed it back against the windshield. This completely blocked my view and in the process knocked the good battery loose. So there I was attempting to steer a stalled car w/ the hood against the windshield down a 4 lane divided road. I made it to a neighborhood thankfully. Destroyed the hood though. :/ That's about one of the dumbest and most redneck moments in my life.

My first truck was a 94 ranger with 187k on it. Smelled awful so i got new carpet and seats. Got the carpet but had to wait a couple of days on the seats so i drove around on a milk carton for two days before the seats came in. Not very comfy

I had an old Dodge Ram that was a mess. The alternator was junk, so I used three old batteries and "alternated them" every night. I'd use one, keep a full one in the bed as a spare, and have the last one on a trickle charge at my house. This went on for over three months. In this time I managed to drain out five batteries to the point where they wouldn't recharge. That's right I said five. All the batteries I was using had the sears two year warranty. I'fd use them until they wouldn't charge and the return them. The Sears manager was getting kind of mad that I got five $100 batteries for nothing. When it was all done I put an alternator in the truck and had two spare brand new batteries. On the same truck I made a "custom" fuel sending unit collar on the gas tank the day before I sold it to the new owner. He went to have a muffler put on because he didn't like the straight pipes and the guy welding the muffler managed to have a pretty good sized fire. I guess my custom work is a little less than desirable.

Had to get a new steering wheel for one truck I had.....don't remember why...it was an old rusty Chevy Luv. Didn't have a second car, so I drove to the junk yard using vice grips as a streering wheel.

haha I got tired of the rusty old exhaust pipe on my Excursion, but I was WAY too cheap to buy even an aftermarket tip. I took some leftover sandpaper and sanded down the tip to get the rust off. Then I grabbed a can of stainless steel looking spraypaint i had laying around and gave it a few coats. It worked great until the rear A/C condenser (Its an Excursion) dripped on it and bubbled the paint.

More recently, I sanded it down again, and put a coat of clear varnish on it. The only problem is that got yellowed from the heat and now it looks worse than before :-/

Road Side Repair

I had a read brake come apart while on a long trip and all the fluid leaked out.

I used a rock that had been laying next to the road to pound the brake line flat on that wheel and refilled the system. Worked fine with only three brakes until I could afford to buy new parts.

I have had some real clunker trucks, I still don't drive off without a roll of duct tape and bailing wire for emergencies. The bailing wire is great for using in place of bolts, clips, hangers, etc. I have used it to hold up mufflers, keep doors closed, hold the hood down and even keep a bumper from falling off. I am sure you all know all about duct tape, so I won't go there.

I once used a large cork as a gas cap, 2x6 for a bumper, put a round headlight in a square hole, ALL of them were temporary of course

When I was a teenager, I had a '66 F-100 2wd 390 3 sp. I badly wanted a lifted 4wd but couldn't afford it. So... one night I was romping around on the hardpack in our dry riverbed. I spotted an old abandoned refrigerator in the bottom of a big dip. I was feeling froggy. My truck was an old beater. Yup, I plowed into the fridge. Only instead of pushing it, I ran over the top of it while standing it up and got high-centered. My rear bumper was in the dirt, the headlights were pointed up into the sky, at least a 45 degree angle. I had to call a buddy to come pull me off it. When he pulled up, his windows were up, stereo cranked, and I still heard him say "WHAT THE F@$&!"

Got pulled off, found my tranny linkage had busted off of the lever. I used some of the coil tubing off of the fridge and bent it around the linkage to hold it together.

It was still on there when I got rid of the truck!

Hee-Haw!

Had a clutch go out once on an old Toyota truck pulling the boat out of the lake.....had to drive home with no clutch so I couldn't stop on the 2 hour drive for ANYTHING. A large Gatorade bottle worked nicely for going #1 ~ THANK GOD a #2 wasn't required!!!! hahahaha
