Blown Head Gasket on 96 4.0
I have a 96 explorer with 40,000 miles on a new engine and it recently blew a head gasket after slowly eating coolant ... I am wondering if anyone has ever done a head gasket on this motor and if they can give me any pointers on what to watch out for and what I am in for I am fairly mechanical so i think i can handle it.. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Just roll up your sleeves, and get into it.
Do both sides while you have it open.
Check heads for cracks and warpage.
Make sure all surfaces are clean and flat before reassembly.
Take extra care with lower intake manifold gasket, tends to slip out of alignment.

No warranty
The work was not done at a dealership and was done by a previous owner and according to the limited records i do have which was a reciept for a new engine .. the warranty was for 12,000 miles. I am wondering if that was just for the labor and if the actual engine itself has a longer warranty from the dealer as it is a ford motor.
