Trouble shifting 1st to 2nd

I did a search but turned up nothing.

I have noticed in the past that I can't shift straight from 1st to 2nd. I have to josle the shifter a bit in neutral first then it may catch. The tranny will lock up if you don't "play a bit first. As the Tranny was rebuild three years ago and only 200 miles on it. I am wondering what this could be caused by.

Honestly I am just learning and don't know alot. Can fix a boat but the truck thing has me stumped alot. Any suggestions? Could it be in the column?

What type transmission & shifter are you asking about here?
3 spd manual with a column shift?
Or a 3 spd manual with a floor shift conversion?
Or a 4 speed, truck type, manual shift with a granny gear?
Or a passenger car style 4 spd manual floor shift type conversion?

Or ?????

Al, Try this, When shifting out of first pull the shift lever slightly towards the steering wheel and let it fall in neutral, then again lift it slightly when going to second. Work with the slop and you should get it every time.

Do not try to push it straight to second, as it will hang about every time.

It used to work for me, then I started making my truck shift it's own gears.

Thanks I greatly appreciate it. So I take it this is fairly normal.

Normal? No, not really.
It is caused by wear and slop in the shift linkages. The usual fix is to replace the rubber grommets, which are available relatively inexpensively from advertisers here at FTE, then re-adjust the shift linkages to factory specs.
Rarely, the shift collar will need to be replaced.
Good luck!

Al, Since John da picker doesn't like normal, let's try it occurs a lot, or often, or at the very least it is not unheard of. I have dealt with the issue on several trucks. and until you can re-bush the system the method that I described can help with shifting issues.
