OK guys, I have a 2002 5.4L expy 4X4. It has the overhead console, its the one without the trip computer, it just displays compass and outside temp. The display has been cutting out, tapping on the unit brought it back. Now its out and would take A LOT OF COAXING to bring it back. I know it's a bad connection of some kind, whether it be loose plugs or bad solder on the LED display, but I just can't figure out how to remove the unit to take it apart and examine it! I notice by banging the front & back that it does slide about 1 - 1.5", but it still won't work loose from the roof. The lights for the A/C/Heat below and up front that control the rear are also out, but they would go out independently of the overhead, so I'm thinking they're unrelated. Anyone know how to get this thing down? As for the sunroof, all works OK, but bumps in the road caused a metalic rattling, I could feel a metal plate going across from drivers side to pass side, with the pass side disconnected/laying loose. My son accidentaly slammed the sunroof cover and the other side came loose, so I removed it competely. Only thing it doesn't do now is draw the sunroof cover open automaticaly when you auto-open the roof. Is there another purpose for it or am I safe leaving it out? Someone mentioned it may be a water drain?? Hey, any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!!!
No one have any ideas? Any one have this overhead down before? I had this Ford CD service manual, but no where does it show how this thing comes down or disassembles... Anyone???
Not sure about the display but I can help with the metal rattling in the moonroof.
There is a metal plate that is held in with very small hex bolts or screws. This plate pushes back the interior cover when the moonroof is opened. There are 2 slotted holes on either end on the plate.
This is best done with the moonroof open and you will need to be on a stepladder, unless you're very tall. Remove the screws and install a star washer on them between the plate. Hand tighten them snug and you should be good to go.
Thanks very much for the reply! Sounds easy enough, these trucks are just so big! But hey, that's why I bought it! I love the size, hate the mileage! I'll try to bolt it down this weekend, I was actually worried if I'd have to remove the glass and slide the assy forward to reattach it, my luck the glass won't re-align and I'd get all these leaks! Thanks again for the help!
