We have a 41 1/2 ton pickup and we were figuring all along that we were going to use our mustang 302 w/ 5 speed. As most of you guys probably know a 302 and a T5 transmission the shifter comes through the floor extremely close to the seat. We have been looking at an S10 transmission and it looks like you can move the shifter about 2-4 inches further away from the seat. I am just wandering if any of you have had much experience with this. Thank you
The S-10 tailshaft housing and shifter tower will bolt up to most T-5 trans, putting it in
a much more favorable position away from the seat and X-member. Determine if it
will fit your Mustang trans.
S-10 gearboxes themselves are not real strong and some have a 1 piece bellhousing
that will not fit Ford motors. Gear ratios vary, some featuring a 2.95 low gear, which
may or may not appeal to you.
I am thinking about going the same route, but have yet to find anything that will bolt
up behind the early Olds engine in my 36 coupe.
Perhaps someone else can chime in with more specific info.
Can't help with the Olds...but look for a early 90's S-10 tranny so yuo have a mechanical speedo, I think about 93/94 it went electronic, and the "kit" to make it work for a mechanical spedometer is kinda pricy.
