I read a lot of the posts here and just wanted to add comments about my Ranger experience. Gas Mileage is about 21 MPG. My 3.0 makes good power. With the mods I've made I have a peppy truck that does a good gob towing a cargo trailer with about 1100# inside. I did haul my antique farm tractor to a local show once and the only problem was that the Ranger is a little light.
My next mods will be Air Bags and Bilstein Shocks.

Lots of other stuff
The headers bolted to the heads perfectly, but I had to use a come-along to pull the Y pipe into place. Wasn't real difficult but I was a little disapointed that that didn't bolt right in.
I did the exhaust first and that was the most dramatic change. If I remember correctly the pipe between was 1 1/2 or 1 3/4" and now it is at least 2". If it was just about the cost/benifit (in retrospect) I would have only done the exhaust.
