Replacing spark plugs

What is the best way to access spark plugs and replace them (pass side) in a 98 explorer 4.0 sohc engine? Thanks.

On my '92 OHV, I access #3 (and sometimes #2) by going from the side through the wheel well. I think the SOHC can be done the same way.

Yep, thru the wheel well. Also, remember to put anti-seize on the new plugs. You should also consider doing the wires since they are such a pita to get to.

Make sure you replace them with OEM grand plugs and wires, Autolite or Motorcraft only. Otherwise you may find yourself doing the job again and/or having low power, pinging and detonation, and other problems.

Is this engine known for breaking the plugs off in the head when removing them ?

Not if you take your time and get a straight shot on them. Hopefully, whoever did them the last time used anti-seize. Some people make the mistake of putting WD40 on new plug threads. Not a good thing to do. When the engine heats up, it bakes the Wd40 into the threads thus creating a bond between the plug and the head.

I find it easier to replace the plugs by removing the front wheels and going thru the wheel well. Also, there are some mud guard flaps that will have to be popped off.
