Over the winter some gremlins must have gotten to my truck. It was running perfectly when I parked it and now it will not idle. I pulled out the idle mixture screw, sprayed some carb cleaner into it and it did squirt into the carb so I know that it is clean. Any other place I should look at before I put a kit in the carb?

That is how my 352 started acting up when the timing gear teeth went south. I drove it to work and when I left to go home the idle was rough. Found out that the timing chain jumped a tooth because the teeth on the timing gear were so old that they crumbled.
Now, everytime I hear someone with similar issues I have flashbacks to that day.
Maybe some others on here will give you some ways to check for the timing chain slack without pulling the cover. I would check that before running it because if it jumps another tooth it could be disastrous.
Of course this all depends on how fresh the engine is...
my 64 223 had the same problems. I tried to spray the carb out with it on the truck but not help. I removed the carb and took off the air horn and sprayed out all passages. (beware though there are check ***** and I counter weight that you have to make sure you don't lose and take note which holes they go in). check the float setting then Put it back together and it should run like a champ. Mine had the 1100 autolite carb. These carbs have troubles with air passages that plug up
